ghostgeek: Why are Americans killing each other?

At least seven people were killed in two related shootings in California on Monday, authorities said, only days after a separate mass shooting in the state killed 11 people.

Hours later, another unrelated shootout in Oakland, Calif., left one person dead and seven people injured.

The first two shootings on Monday occurred at two agricultural nurseries near Half Moon Bay, a coastal city south of San Francisco, Christina Corpus, sheriff of San Mateo County, said Monday.

Officials said a suspect was in custody and there was no ongoing threat to the community.

The shootings were a targeted attack in which the gunman intended to kill specific people, according to a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.

Four victims were found dead Monday afternoon along the Cabrillo Highway, Sheriff Corpus said. Another victim was sent to the Stanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Soon after, three more victims were found dead at a separate nursery about a mile away, she said.

A suspect, Zhao Chunli, 67 years old and a resident of Half Moon Bay, was arrested Monday evening after he was found in his car in the parking lot of a Half Moon Bay police station, authorities said. He was arrested without incident and a semiautomatic weapon, which authorities believed was used in the shootings, was found in his car. ...

An additional shooting took place on Monday evening at a gas station in Oakland, located about 45 miles northeast of Half Moon Bay. Police said seven people were shot and are in stable condition while one person died during the incident. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

ghostgeek: Los Angeles police shot dead a black wheelchair-bound double amputee as he tried to hobble away from them on his stumps.

Two officers from Huntington Park Police Department were temporarily stood down from duty on Monday after they fired at least eight shots at Anthony Lowe Jr., a 36-year-old father-of-two.

Police said they received a report that a person had been stabbed by a man in a wheelchair. Officers said when they arrived on the scene they found Mr Lowe with a butcher knife.

Video footage taken by a passerby and later shared on social media shows Mr Lowe out of his wheelchair, trying to get away from two officers and using his arms to propel himself along the ground.

Huntington Park police said that Mr Lowe, whose family says he suffered from mental health issues, ignored officers’ verbal commands and “threatened to advance or throw the knife at the officers”.

In a statement the department said officers, who were not wearing body cameras, tried to Taser Mr Lowe twice, but it had failed to incapacitate him.

jandcl: People will kill each other regardless if we have guns or not. Humans have killed each other from the beginning of time, Now the gun makes it easy to do, but so did the sling, the bow and arrow, and so on as man invented better killing equipment. But what’s important is that some people do not kill others even when they have this killing equipment. So the answer to the question what makes people feel they need to kill. If we can ever answer that question I think it will go a long way in getting to root of that dark side of the human race.

ghostgeek: More of the same:

A man armed with three guns fatally shot his ex-wife and five others during a rampage in a small rural town in the US state of Mississippi, police say.

The victims were killed at several locations, including a store and two homes, in Arkabutla, a community of fewer than 300 people.

Police have charged a 52-year-old local man with first-degree murder and held him at the county jail.

No motive for his attack has yet been identified.

The suspect is believed to have acted alone, said Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves.

The rampage began when the gunman entered a petrol station convenience store at around 11:00 local time (17:00 GMT) and shot a man to whom he had no apparent connection, Sheriff Brad Lance said.

He then went to a nearby home where he fatally shot his ex-wife and, according to CNN, struck but did not shoot her fiance.

Investigators say the gunman then drove to a home next to his own residence and fatally shot a man who may have been his stepfather, as well as an unnamed woman, the New York Times reports.

He then shot two people, one inside a car and one on the road, not far from his own home. The final two victims appear to have been construction workers on a job at the site, according to Sheriff Lance.

A 3-year-old girl in Houston gained access to a firearm and "unintentionally" shot and killed her 4-year-old sister late Sunday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the preliminary investigation showed that the two children had been inside an apartment with five family members and friends and each of the two children's parents believed the other was watching the kids. Instead, they were left unsupervised and picked up an "unsecured" and loaded semi-automatic pistol.

The family members heard one gunshot and ran into the room to find one child had apparently accidentally shot the other toddler, Gonzalez said at a press conference. The injured child was unresponsive, he said, and the parents immediately called 911.

"The toddler was pronounced deceased at the scene," he said on Twitter.

Officials said it will be up to the district attorney to decide whether charges will be pressed against any of the adults.

"You've got to make sure you're a responsible gun owner," Gonzalez said. "Secure your weapons in a safe place. It's got to be more than just to tell the kids not to touch the weapons."

A 3-year-old boy fatally shot himself when he found a 9 mm handgun in a nightstand in his Florida home, according to authorities.

The tragedy unfolded Wednesday evening at a home in DeLand, about 40 miles north of Orlando.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office called it "one of the worst calls imaginable" to respond to.

The shooting occurred as the 3-year-old and a 7-year-old were being watched by their 16-year-old sister while the parents were grocery shopping, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said at a news conference Thursday.
