A settlement has been reached between the families of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook mass school shooting and the company that made the gun used in the massacre.

Twenty students and six educators died in the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

According to a notice of settlement filed in Waterbury Superior Court on Tuesday and obtained by PEOPLE, Remington Arms Company and relatives of nine of the victims have come to terms on an agreement that will bring an end to a 2014 civil suit.

The civil suit accused the gun manufacturer of "prioritizing profit over public safety" in the marketing of assault rifles to civilians. A civil trial had been scheduled to begin this September.

"These nine families have shared a single goal from the very beginning: to do whatever they could to help prevent the next Sandy Hook. It is hard to imagine an outcome that better accomplishes that goal," Josh Koskoff, the families' attorney, said in a statement. "This victory should serve as a wake up call not only to the gun industry, but also the insurance and banking companies that prop it up."

He continued: "For the gun industry, it's time to stop recklessly marketing all guns to all people for all uses and instead ask how marketing can lower risk rather than court it. For the insurance and banking industries, it's time to recognize the financial cost of underwriting companies that elevate profit by escalating risk. Our hope is that this victory will be the first boulder in the avalanche that forces that change."

Ten of the world’s biggest carmakers were sued on Wednesday by American consumers who claim they concealed the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning in more than five million vehicles equipped with keyless ignitions, leading to 13 deaths.

According to the complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court, carbon monoxide is emitted when drivers leave their vehicles running after taking their electronic key fobs with them, under the mistaken belief that the engines will shut off.

The 28 named plaintiffs said this can injure or have “deadly” results for people who inhale the colourless and odourless gas, including when vehicles are left in garages attached to homes. They also said the defect reduces their vehicles’ resale values.

A keyless ignition lets a driver start a vehicle by pushing an on-off button, instead of inserting a key, once the vehicle senses the presence of a nearby electronic fob.
