Do guns protect you, or simply cause violence? (Page 141)

ghostgeek
ghostgeek: Somebody needs to install machine guns on every street corner. That way, everybody can be shot and there won't be any violence ever again.

TheCovenant: Thank God he was both mentally ill and homeless, those are both affirmative defenses to a manslaughter charge.

In the United States, A homeless man sleeping under a bridge has the same status in law as living in an abode. It requires a search warrant to search his belongings. If the homeless mentally ill man was standing on cardboard, then he was killed in his own home.

kittybobo34: Covenant,,,You're not taking into account the erratic behavior of the mental case involved. He was spitting on the cops and wouldn't stop so they put a bag over his head. Not sure what else he was doing as that is sealed now, but they felt forced to restrain him.. Cops deal with all sorts of dangerous situations and my sympathy goes out to them for having to cope with mental patients. So my first inclination is to hold judgement until the facts are out.

TheCovenant: Wow homeless, mentally ill and also possibly diseased, Jesus Christ no wonder they had to kill him.

kitty, you to can spit, does that mean the cops should use deadly force in case you might have a disease and scratch them with one of your nails. I cant tell you how many times i've been scratched in hospitals(camh) by diseased old haggs and i never killed anyone much less an old lady. Just got a needle in the arm to calm me down.

While he was spitting on Police he claimed to have Covid. They put a spit hood on him to protect him from his saliva.

Could it have been handled differently yes, was their other options, yes.

He also had PCP in his system.

TheCovenant: Ghost geek, do mean the Heckler and Koch Machine Pistols that the British Police carry in the streets. I think you are caught in a time warp in the 1960s when bobbies didn't carry guns. I like their black uniforms and balaclavas. Very stylish.

Lawyers for the seven police officers suspended over Prude’s death have said the officers were strictly following their training that night, employing a restraining technique known as “segmenting.” They claimed Prude’s use of PCP, which caused irrational behavior, was “the root cause” of his death.

Jesus Christ? No, Jesus H Christ, Homeless, mentally ill , diseased and addicted. Killing him was a favour. Thanks a lawt.

ghostgeek: There were 17,284 homicides in the US in 2017, giving a rate of 5.3 per 100,000. In Britain, there were 785 in financial year 2017/18 — the nearest equivalent time period — giving a rate of 1.8 per 100,000, some three times lower.

Within this, there were 285 knife murders in England and Wales in 2017/18 — the highest number since the Second World War — and 34 in Scotland, giving a combined British rate of 0.48 per 100,000. In the US, the number for 2017 was 1,591, giving an almost identical rate of 0.49. So even amid a spike in British knife crime, Americans as a whole are at least as likely as to die from a stabbing.

chronology
chronology: Covenant. There is no disputing that America had a a serious attitude problem towards the mentally ill. It all began in the 1980s when Hinkly was found not guilty of shooting Mr Reagan on the grounds of mental illness. Hinkly came from a wealthy family and could afford a top class lawyer. After his lenient sentence, American's began raging at how'loonies' were getting away with murder. What followed was an era of brutality towards people with mental health issues. People were executed in the States who would not even have been charged with murder in other countries. You also had execution style shootings of mentally ill people on the streets of America. Often for trivial threat's.

England followed the American line and sensational stories of'loonies' attacking people filled the newspapers throughout the 1980s.

A senior Scotland Yard Officer commented that for every attack on normal people by mentally ill people, there were ten time's as many mentally ill people beaten up and attacked just for the amusement of the attackers.

It does not seem as bad today. But the root's of the problem went back to Mr Reagan's shooting and the public perception that'crazies' were getting away with murder.

TheCovenant: ghostgeek and chronology, you forgot the statistics from Northern Ireland.
The American Mental hospitals underwent reform when Elenor Rosevelt insisted that consciencious objectors be allowed to work in hospitals instead of military service.

Anyone who has been committed to prison or a state institution understands that the severe punishments involved in incarceration warrants any and all attempts to resist and escape punishment. Prison and mental hospitals are so severe they are worth dying over to avoid. At least Daniel Prude believed this.

I wasn't there to see it, but I hear Byron Hadley was sobbing like a little girl when they took him away.

TheCovenant: Yes people believe in the police without understanding what they really do. Its not ignorance, its just that people police and Judges just don't care.

I feel like, nowadays, we’re gettin’ a real good look at each other. It’s wild, because I even have insight into how the white community must’ve felt watching the black community go through the scourge of gun violence… because I don’t care either.
