Southern states remain woefully uneducated (Page 3)

near50ohoh: whatever i say you may take with a huge lick of salt. just putting that out there up front. but i do have theories. and opinions. and i have yet to see a CV on here so...
1) it is important to know where schools draw the line re:funding requests since that is the political high tide mark. if that is high school grad then that should be the discussion but since it's not..
2) harvard is an awesome univ and i would be proud to enter any course of theirs. but hang on did you say the courses were in comparative subjects? a premed or pre law from georgia univ may be better than a parapsychology PHD from harvard. (though that would endlessly fascinate me,it may not be as good as my posit from georgia)
3) the correlation between religion and education issues in the south has yet to be made strongly enough for me. but let's say it is so for arguments sake..
4) isn't it possible that a second factor may be at play? i raise again the possibility that the students followed in this survey may have what amounts to a secondary degree or second major in their own language and culture. which is not being viewed as their education because it may invalidate the argument made by the study. the study is only looking at their public school rearing. i feel it diminishes the study not to look at the possibility of that rearing as an adjunct to their public school. (for example i did not speak english first and at home we spoke 2 languages. anyone who bases my language skills just on english capabilities is not studying all my abilities. therefore their study has an inherent flaw and no actual validity)
in conclusion i don't have enough information to discuss this thread topic so i'm just willing to put the caveat out there for those who do

davesdatahut: Near...unquestionably, the factors causing the southern states to lag behind in education are many - cultural, historical, economic, attitudinal. I tossed the religion question out there as one possible factor because, in its worst forms, it encourages people simply to accept some preachers' view on the world as opposed to looking at things critically.
Beyond that, you have historical factors, like an agricultural economy that, in the past, relied less on academic skills that other skills not learned in college. Then there are economic factors, including the simple fact that college is expensive and many families just can't afford it.
How much attitude toward higher education comes into play, I'm not sure. But, from discussion I've had with some work colleagues from the South, there remains some suspicion, or lack of interest, among some people in higher education as something that northerners and other outside forces are trying to foist on them and that really isn't necessary. It's hard to pin down, but it's there, according to some people I have talked to.
What I will stick by is the overall assessment that southern states are less educated, based on the significantly lower percentages of college degrees. They also have lower percentages of high school degrees, which just adds to the problem. (High school grad rates in the South range from 81 to 86 percent, while they range from 87 to 92 percent in most other states.) All that is a problem in today's world, which demands a lot more education than people needed in the past.

nadiaovrthere
nadiaovrthere: david…(the following is for your own good if your intelligent enough to understand why…otherwise just go ahead and reply with more dumb stuff!)
“So let me get this straight, Nadia the Academic. You come in here, inform everyone that you are "in academia" (presumably this means we should accord you great respect) and then bleat some academio-babble about 'confirmational bias' while barely asking a question that would let you know whether I or anyone else here is or isn't biased”…I don’t need to ask any questions, you freely give me everything I need to “tic” you as biased…need more proof, look at the title of this nonsensical thread “southern states REMAIN WOEFULLY UNEDUCATED” not less educated or less degrees per capita…WOEFULLY UNEDUCATED! That’s bias david…I don’t need to ask you any further questions when you freely gave me all I need to know about your insecurities and neuroses’!
“Oh yes, I did...sophomoric and some other pretentious drivel about 'threat anxiety.” straw man arguments ARE sophomoric david no two ways about it, whether from you or anyone else; you do have “threat anxiety” -(some academio-babble about 'confirmational bias' -you just proved it again! (obvisously you didn’t take my advice as to google confirmation bias)
Your bias and treat anxiety are preventing you from understanding context david…even rudimentary critical thinking skills would clearly show you the context of your flawed argument but under treat you choose to cling on to a nonsocial “theory”. no way david is going to listen to a woman who contradicts him and he sees as a threat to his ego…the words you use, the order of those words and the context you use those words to respond too instead of the context of the argument give me everything I need to know!
I don’t care how you relate with other people david and it’s utterly irrelevant to holding on to your ridiculously STUPID premise and you’re transparent attempt to denigrate a region based on your bias…see title “SOUTERN STATES REMAIN WOEFULLY UNEDUCATED” when I see stupid I call stupid…something we need MORE of not less..when I see bias and threat anxiety I call bias and threat anxiety…something we need MORE of not less.
I’m an associate professor of psychology at harvard university david, I don’t say that to boast, though your threat anxiety and your male ego will present it that way to your psyche, I say that in the hopes you might TAKE this as a valuable free education on how not to sound UNEDUCATED, that’s my job david, to remove dumb from public consciousness and there is just no nice way to say you strike me as dumb! Sorry but nothing you have said has a single ounce of intellect to it…NOTHING…again daivd…NOTHING YOU HAVE SAID HAS A SINGLE OUNCE OF INTELLECT TO IT…again…NOTHING! (the entire premise is a staw man argument at its core) yes david, you are proving to me you are DUMB!
you may now feel free to blather on with more nonsense, more SOPHOMORIC straw man arguments, and more biased diatribe about things you know nothing about…can’t wait!

davesdatahut: Wow, Nadia the Academic....what do I say to all that....other than wow?
The spew of invective you unleashed is a stunning and reprehensible display full of name-calling and attempts to cut off all debate. It represents conduct unbecoming a member of the academic community. Utterly unbecoming. It is my great hope that your superiors at Harvard quickly get a taste of how you see the world and how you approach debate so they can decide whether you are fit for continued employment.
Beyond that, I think I will just let all that stand on its own, for all to read. No other reply is necessary to your rave, Nadia the Academic.
I should note, however, on the subject of women, that I have had plenty of enlightening and interesting discussions with the many intelligent women who come around these parts and speak their mind. Most comport themselves with decorum, without the type of unhinged approach you take. Indeed your approach is more like that of some angry men who come in here to vent their frustrations about the world. If there are others in this place who see my posts the same way as you, let them speak.

near50ohoh: nadia ? just gotta say. that's not how i was taught to argue with someone at univ when i majored in psych. and everything i know to be true about harvard would make me think perhaps they would agree with me on this. you can disagree very firmly without calling somone an idiot publically. and btw, he's not.

nadiaovrthere: @david…everything I said about you was just confirmed by that response to my reply (which was purposefully crafted to prove I can illicit that response)…I completely exposed you as a biased, emotional thinking, low intellect individual…i.e. “southern states are woefully uneducated” - not a mention of that context just more fragile ego!
@near…that’s how I got the job…by NOT being what weak male egos want in a woman
