Hating Your Country Coffrey: I've been accused many times of hating the US because I level heavy criticisms at it. Of course, since I am liberal, it is the conservatives who have said I hate the US, while at the same token, they say horrible, outrageous things about the president that was democratically elected, not to mention some extreme conservatives wanting to secede. Is recognizing a problem and trying to address it really mean you hate your country? Outbackjack: No. I hate Australia. The state that is.The two party clowns. The blind obedience to U.S imperialism. The jingoistic bile inducing patriotism. The controllers. I love Australia. The people. The landscape and country. Our way of life generally(us lucky ones that is). XWhiteandBlue: OutJack: What's wrong with patriotism? (your post is a little too vague to understand what you man by that) I'd also like to hear some examples on how AU is "blindly obedient" to the USA... somehow... that is not something wee see from this side of the world. Having interests in common is not the same as being blindly obedient. Aura: Meh, it really is the same every where. I don't think any one country is better than the other overall. They might do some things right but then they have other things 'wrong' billy_piper: i think were on teh precipice of a huge change in the world due to information and technology. the old ways have much catching up to do. and what jack said billy_piper: true. its a façade as was communism, but with all the info bouncing back and forward i predict big real changes (which could be ugly) in the next 100 years. ShawnXx: Coffrey imo when there is only fighting among the 2 main political parties in the government and among people that is hatred for your country. It makes me wanna slap some sense into people when they do it because it's not the kind of communication that will solve any of the problems in this country. We don't all have to agree and we can still find solutions because we all have one thing in common...we're not happy with the government. Coffrey: Oh, I forgot, Senator Al Franken had a great quote on this I just remembered "Conservatives don't get it. Liberals love America just as much as they do. But in a different way. You see, they love America the way a 4 year old loves their mommy. To a 4 year old, everything mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes mommy is bad. Liberals love America like grown-ups. Grown-up love means understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad and helping your loved one grow." Outbackjack: Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Samuel Johnson XWhiteandblue. What interests are you talking about? You are not talking about my interests or the average Australian/U.S citizens interests. The interests of which you speak are the interests of the Capitalist classes. For example who was the first country in the world to commit to the disastrous Iraq war? Which country sent 60,000 soldiers to fight in Vietnam? Australia of course. We have U.S bases here now including Pine Gap and Darwin. There are further bases planned in Western Australia for the future. You would think we would learn really because its been a pretty one sided affair in recent years. As a reward for being the first country to commit to the Iraq war the U.S government stripped Australian farmers of their long held wheat contracts. Then you have the U.S free trade agreement. That piece of paper isnt fit for bog roll.We are repeatedly told by Freidman freaks to get rid of our tariffs and open up our markets.Well we did that and guess what? The Yanks just laughed and gave us a phony free trade agreement which locked in U.S protectionism. A former Prime Minister of ours was spot on when he said "Australia is the arse end of the world." dave3974: yet australia and the australian life style is envied by the world and the country most people would like to go to . the americans are ruthless on the trade front, they have stiched up the uk too, -you need strong leaders to stand up to them duncan124: When Australia and the Australian lifestyle was envied by the world it had a very high tax and social spending budget. duncan124: A lot of nice people went there to escape Britain and died out there in the cold because the losers had taken over in the UK. Mask Of Dionysus: No, man........us gay greek men are a rare breed..........the homosexuals in Greece are not human, you see. They are mules, good for slaughter. I like it here in Canada more Outbackjack: Australias number 2 on the best place to be born in 2013 but that still doesnt mean that our society isnt corrupt. Mask Of Dionysus: Homosexuals come from all shapes and sizes, colours and cultures and are in every corner of the Earth. Are you afraid yet? LOL Illuminatist: dave3974: "yet australia and the australian life style is envied by the world and the country most people would like to go to . the americans are ruthless on the trade front, they have stiched up the uk too, -you need strong leaders to stand up to them" "you need strong leaders to stand up to them" Yeah. Like Russia, China, and the whole mid-east, practically...... Sarcastic Dots: If anything, I think showing disdain for the state of ones country is as equally patriotic and endearing as blindly supporting it. Some people think love is supporting a person or something regardless of what they do and don't do, but in my opinion it comes from being bitterly honest about someone or something when no one else will. Like you said, conservatives are as guilty of "hating" their country as any liberal. However, I get the distinct impression that conservatives believe they are more patriotic because of their overt professions of servitude to the military. I think conservatives believe that if total war started then liberals would be pacifists. I take the view that, if your country is under threat of invasion, all those political nuances become irrelevant, but then, America has (thankfully) escaped the grasp of its own blitz, so we'll never know if Americans would turn on each other... I highly doubt it though. (Edited by Sarcastic Dots) |
