LiptonCambell: Do you have anything constructive to comment, or are you just here to assert your self-appointed superiority?

LiptonCambell: It really is sad that, when discussing politics, some people can only snort, beat their chest, and berate the people they don't agree with....they haven't said a single word about socialism or otherwise....they're just vomiting personal attacks with no concept of what socialism is....

lesleyjune1: When you say you would prefer a combination of communism and capitalism, how is that supposed to work, as the base for identifying each of them is who owns the means of production, therefore if the factories and fields are owned by the community or by private persons. Both at the same time cannot happen and if it does, we deal with socialism. Means: possession of means of production determines society, socialism is the only mix, where you have privately owned and community owned at the same time.
Soviet communism did not work because a communist society calls for a special type of person, one who puts society and common wealth ontop of personal wishes. Education has to do the job here, but who is going to educate such kids, no individualism allowed? The best you can educate and raise are hypocrates, therefore you destroy one of the basic stones of communism.

maxwellion: Hi everyone, interesting thread...I consider myself to be a Social Democrat... So I believe in nationalisation of Public services, proportion taxation, free university education and government housing programs as constitutional rights. But I also believe in the Swiss model of direct democracy where citizens have the right to enact legislation for referendum. But I am definately not a communist nor do I believe in violent revolutions. I believe in principle that a government should work to uphold the welfare of its citizens and in return citizens are obliged to follow the law or interact to have the law changed. Just a thought... Im interested in hear other people's views.

LiptonCambell: I personally find that, in the pursuit of upholding the "welfare" of the people, many people get their rights trampled. And that's unacceptable.

maxwellion: I agree... I haven't seen a country that has got it right just yet.. But I have seen little bits here and there that do work.... but I am an optimist and I still hope for a Government that gets it right.

LiptonCambell: I've seen the awful things governments are capable of. I'd rather live in a country where my rights were the only thing guaranteed- once you start guaranteeing things like food, housing, electricity, medical, cell phones- seeing where all the money comes from, who actually receives the money and see the abuses by the people who use those programs- I'd much rather live in a country where rights are always always always put ahead of other peoples welfare.

That's not to say I'm against welfare. I'm just against the kind that's funded by government endorsed coercion, violence, and threats... there are far too many things people feel the government needs to supply when a private version can supply a more effective, more efficient, and more fair way....

Etceteranough
Etceteranough: The only difference between communism and socialism is the name. You can dress it up and call it something that sounds good but in the end ... expansion of federal government always means you will have less room to move and prosper as individuals. A society does not need the federal government to control every aspect of their lives, which is what socialism is. I know right now in the US .. and many other places, there is this war on capitalism as if industries who make profits (such as the coal and oil industry who only make a 14% personal profit I believe, the rest goes back into the economy) are somehow to blame for our problems. Croni-capitalism isn't real capitalism, government is hiding behind the nametag. What we have in this country (The U.S.) are corporations who lobby in millions and millions of dollars to politicians and buy their votes for the highest bid. They no longer speak for us they speak for the big corporations and whoever throws the most money. Communism (or socialism) as you prefer to call it..means nothing more than this .. The federal government will take MOST of the money .. and the majority of the society is given the scraps. Look at North Korea, there is no more "equal" place in the world than North Korea. 95% of them have zip to nothing. They are a socialist society.

Etceteranough: Limited power to the federal government, more power to the state governments. State governments are easy to influence. If you don't like the law of the land in one state, you can go to another state. In a communist society, there is no such thing.
