All religions have had opportunistic individuals who use what knowledge they have to influence and monipulate those with less knowledge to secure their own power, athoraty, or their own twisted place in history. When life is so bad that marterdom sounds like a quick pass to paridise as well as an escape from lifes condition it is easy for one to be convinced that what they do in the name of God will be rewarded in heaven. The Islamic church gained it's foothold through its charitable works in the poorest of regions, and solidified its power through monipulation of its sacred texts not unlike The church of Rome.
