LiptonCambell: I don't think there's any reason to protect an idiot from themselves.

Nor do I think we should charge the idiot for the service of protecting them from themselves

Nor do i think we should all be charged equally for the service of protecting the idiot from themselves.

Let the idiot do with their body what they will- freedom is having the freedom to making the wrong choices in life.

No, I don't think any of our tax dollars should go towards paying for other peoples health- there should not be a national healthcare system.

And to insinuate that, because there *is* a national healthcare, that we should be told what to eat and how much to eat is ridiculous. Nothing should give you that kind of power to meddle in peoples lives like that- and if you are so interested in saving money, then you should support the abolishment of the federal healthcare system altogether- not the abolishment of the right to decide what goes into your body....

Raise the tax on cane sugar, beet sugar and corn syrup to outrageous levels.just like the outrageous tax on tobacco for the same exact reason.

LiptonCambell: But, again, we pay taxes to subsidize farmers who grow corn- essentially, the government gives farmers more money than the corn is worth, and sells it at less money than they paid the farmers- this keeps corn cheap at a huge cost to the tax payers.....

And now you're suggesting we tax it so it's expensive again? So we're spending money to make it cheap, then spending even more money to make it expensive again? In what world does that make any sense?

"Corn is the top crop for subsidy payments. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 mandates that billions of gallons of ethanol be blended into vehicle fuel each year, guaranteeing demand, but US corn ethanol subsidies are between $5.5 billion and $7.3 billion per year. Producers also benefitted from a federal subsidy of 51 cents per gallon, additional state subsidies, and federal crop subsidies that can bring the total to 85 cents per gallon or more. However, the federal ethanol subsidy expired December 31, 2011.[16] (US corn-ethanol producers were shielded from competition from cheaper Brazilian sugarcane-ethanol by a 54-cent-per-gallon tariff, however that tariff also expired December 31, 2011.[17][18])"

Sarcastic Dots: I don't think people realise that there is good fat and bad fat; there is good sugar and bad sugar. In America, the vast majority of pop isn't made from natural sugars, hence why you have "classic coke" and "classic dr pepper".

Sarcastic Dots: From Dr Pepper wiki

Much of the soft drink industry in the United States stopped using sugar in the 1980s, in response to a series of price supports and import quotas introduced beginning in 1982 that increased the price of sugar above the global market price. As a result, most U.S. soft drinks, including Dr Pepper, now use high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar.

...

On March 25, 2007, Coca-Cola bottlers in the Dr Pepper Heartland commenced sales of 16 ounce cans of Dr Pepper made with cane sugar and featuring a logo with 'Old Doc' on them. This product is scheduled to be a limited time release.

"there is good sugar and bad sugar"

We're going in circles here. Besides:

"
NEW YORK -- High fructose corn syrup won't get a wholesome new name after all.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday rejected the Corn Refiners Association's bid to rename its sweetening agent "corn sugar."

Given the sweetener's bad reputation in recent years, the association submitted an application to the agency in 2010 to have the product renamed on nutrition labels.

But the FDA said that it defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystallized food – not a syrup."
