The hometown of Harvard University has declared a war on carbonation.

The mayor of Cambridge, Mass. introduced a policy resolution that would ban soft drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages in restaurants.

The ban is similar to one that was recently proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. That policy would ban any bottled soft drinks more than 16 ounces. The city is also considering limitations on popcorn and milkshakes.

However, the actual resolution calls for a complete ban on soft drinks.

“Whereas New York City has a plan to limit the serving size of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in restaurants; now therefore bit it ordered that the City Manager be and hereby is requested to refer the matter of a ban on soda and sugar sweetened beverages in restaurants to the Cambridge Public Health Department for a recommendation.

“In addition to being an obesity threat, soda is one of the contributing factors to an increasing rate of diabetes and heart disease amongst younger people,” Mayor Henrietta Davis told the Boston Globe. “

And just like the New York City proposal, the Cambridge proposal is fizzing out with residents.

“Here we go again,” said Talk 1200 host Jeff Katz. “A few weeks ago it was Michael Bloomberg who wanted to be my mommy. Now, it’s Henrietta Davis.”

Katz, who hosts a morning drive radio program on Boston’s Fox News Radio affiliate, said his phones have been ringing non-stop with critics of the proposed soda ban.

“This is not a size restriction,” Katz said. “They’re talking about an all-out ban. It’s Big Mommy Government.”

Those opposed to ban said it’s not surprising in a city nicknamed the “People’s Republic of Cambridge” and served by the transit system’s “red line.”

“Only in Mass-ghanistan could driving a Coke across town lines constitute smuggling,” said one of Katz’s listeners. “Such is the mind of a liberal politician.”

Another listener wondered, “So zero soda, but I could order an entire pizza? It’s pathetic.”

But some city leaders agree with the mayor.

“It’s a very good thing to try and pursue,” City Councilor Minka vanBeuzekom told the Boston Globe, predicting the ban may be difficult to pass.

"Taking a cue from New York City's proposed ban on sugary drinks, one Massachusetts town is looking to pass a similar crackdown to combat obesity and diabetes. Residents of Cambridge may have to sacrifice larger portions of soft drinks in its battle of the bulge, nearly a month after New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made national headlines with his own proposal.
Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis submitted the proposal at a city council meeting on Monday night."

The fact is America is the fattest country in the world so its understandable that politicians are becoming draconian in their approach to deal with this big problem, I dont agree with it but its understandable. As America can not function as a nation if so many of their citizens are so fat, the cost to the nation is in the millions in health care and in productivity as if you get too obese I imagine you wont be able to work.

David responds:

I got my news source from the news as well. You decided to go with "your" news source without the possibility that "my" news article was correct. So I go the extra mile and "prove" my source and you get all bent out of shape? Grow up. Perhaps your left wing Obama inspired progressive liberal news sources get in the way of facts? Tell me it ain't so.

davidk14: Barbie,

It's about the government deciding what is good and not good for you by legislation. Today it's soda, tomorrow who knows what. Maybe meat or perhaps TV or radio.

And Star,

Then don't post about stuff not happening in your part of the world. You don't hear me supporting or not supporting the good or bad about fish and chips. I used to love fish and chips .

But I dont care what country the subject is i will comment. Its my right to do so and that's how i was educated to do so in my country.

Well I imagine this proposal wont pass as wouldn't that be against the rights of the restaurants of free enterprise or something like that and they could just counter claim that their business would be affected.

As I put I understand that people are getting desperate with the obesity and health crisis that is affecting many American citizens but for me this is a step too far. I personally dont have a problem with limiting the sizes even though they seems unfair on people that are able to moderate and wont people just get two smaller fizzy drinks instead ( people know I mean soda lol) Surprisingly we havent had any such measures but I think American food and drink sizes are larger then we have in the UK.

lavendar_star: Well that's our theory in the UK is that you guys live too far apart and take cars everywhere so dont walk no where, obviously not the case in the major cities, back in the 90s they would say here that in ten years time we are going to be as big as the Americans and now we are lol.

But seriously it seems wrong what the mayor is proposing but done for the right reasons.

so if you do want to go for a stroll in some parts of the US, your taking your life in your hand. I think America maybe too pro car maybe they need to make more sidewalks instead of banning things.

Magz Rides Again: I don't care who and how much they want to ban... it wasn't soft drinks (carbonated) or even tobacco that destroyed my marriage along with many other marriages. That honour goes to alcohol. Why not restrict the max per person per day of that? It makes as much sense as all this tripe.
