Free will, AchillesSinatra: So... Some people seem to go through life doing nice things. Take the Dalai Lama. Other people go through life doing horrible things. Both do these things freely (according to the religious nuts) Why didn't a benevolent God create more people like the Dalai Lama? AchillesSinatra: Because they wouldn't be free? Er, no, we just agreed there are people who freely do nice things and dickheads who freely do nasty things. I don't expect you to understand. (Edited by AchillesSinatra) MJ59: God gave us "free will" as an escape clause in case he did a shitty job making us in his image Enkidu2017: My goddess gives me limited range .......... but i still get to sniff around to my hearts delight AchillesSinatra: Ok, let me more clear,,,, It's often said (some might say as as an excuse) that an omnipotent, omniscient, benevolent God cannot be held responsible for the fuck-ups of mankind. After all, we were granted the greatest gift of all -- free will Now, the story goes, we are not puppets, we can do what we like (which is already enough to give any material determinist a fit, but never mind them). Well, it seems fairly obvious that some people are more saint-like than others. My example was the Dalai Lama. Choose yer own if you prefer. And it's fairly clear that there are a lot of mean fuckers out there. Our religious friends will not deny that both act freely; of their own free will. My point is: If God really has our best interests at heart, why not create a world of (free!) Dalai Lamas? And stick yer Nazis up yer divine hooter, thank you very much. AchillesSinatra: Anyway, the Dalai's books are a complete ripoff, too. Chapter 1: Compassion Chapter 2: Compassion Chapter 3: Compassion Where the sex and violence? AchillesSinatra: My fave philosopher: John Searle -- obscenely clever and very funny too Start at 39:00 AchillesSinatra: Well, Searle was once asked at a lecture (in London, he claims)... "Hey professor! What if it were scientifically proven to you that there is no such thing as free will? Would you accept it?" Searle - "Listen to what you're saying? If it were demonstrated to me that there is no such thing as rational decision making and free choice, would I rationally and freely choose to accept the result?" Told ya he was smart Enkidu2017: lol if you are going to lecture to the choir .... could you at least get some back up music ? Wordy_Queen: Where there is light, there is darkness. God created free will because He wants you to CHOOSE Him(just like we want others to choose to love us). | Philosophy Chat Room 17 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
