Is it too radical to think that the only way the earth will survive is for all humans to die?

MrSteveA67
MrSteveA67: A good question to begin with would be whether or not the Earth matters and if so, how and why and what determines that value etc.

Also, what does "survival" refer to regarding the Earth? Can you be more specific? If the Earth was a barren rock, would that be "survival"?

What would be the metric or manner of determination by which the "survival" of Earth would be determinable? If it was to be made by human(s) on Earth, then this would immediately appear to require that humanity in some form was present otherwise there wouldn't even be a manner to determine whether or not the Earth was present.

Maybe a clearer and more precise description of the subject could be given?

MrSteveA67: Ok, maybe my last comments are too complex. Let's see if we can get this even simpler. I would have assumed the answer to the initial question is obvious, but maybe it's not, so let's try to get to even more basic properties and instead of relying upon any form of potentially arbitrary values, let's see if simple logic can give the answer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q) In the initial question, does this Earth you're referring to have a sky and if so, would you say the sky is generally of some specific color?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you answer that question, and desire to have some form of logical consistency in the conclusions, what did you use as evidence in support of your answer to the question?

Banche: Basic premise ... The earth has survived and flurished after the ice age there were no gases from cars or intoxicants from factories and yet still they say there is global warming actually a natural phenomenon, which was brought upon the earth in the dinasaur age. The earth goes through cycles in which it gets damaged and heals. Do humans add to the carnage of the doom of earth in everyday living, no but we will destroy each other before we destroy the earth.

thawalkingman: Interesting question.

First off you should be a little more clear on what the 'survival' of the Earth means. The Earth has survived some huge catastrophes. It took millions of years to recover but it survived. Humanity is certainly pushing the Earth towards one of these mass extinction events but I doubt we will wipe out all life on Earth. It might take a few million or many million years fro the Earth to recuperate but it will most likely survive. The survival of humanity, on the other hand is doubtful.

The question about whether or not all humans would have to die to avoid such an extinction event is also a good one. It is important to remember that the environmental destruction we see now is the result of a certain way of living that developed around the time of the agrarian revolution and has continued becoming more extreme up to the present.

There have been other cultures of humanity that have lived a much more balanced existence. While we can't roll back the clock to the Stone Age to begin again, we might benefit from learning about these cultures and how they coexisted with their environment. Perhaps there is a way for us to use our technology to alleviate the suffering of the planet and avert catastrophe.

I don't hold out much hope for a solution. Mankind reminds me of the story of the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Every solution we come up with to solve our problems only turns into another hundred problems.

Antibiotics result in resistant bacteria.
Technology that ought to free the mind, consumes the mind with endless triviality.
More powerful weapons developed for 'defense' lead to more repressive regimes and fewer freedoms.

Your question is really whether humanity will ever become wise enough to balance our activities with the world around us. I'd like to think that is possible, but most days I wouldn't put money on it.

Glad you were joking caveman, this is hurting my brain thinking to much lol. I'm done with this subject ... next question?

Banche: Just one answere: It isn't just a few it is many (maybe not all) look at governments and societies around the world. Those who poison waterways take down forests and jungles those who take from the earth and don't put back, how many species of animals and plants no longer exist because of man?

As to humans dying first.. the earth will survive, but we will destroy ourselves.

LOL! We need some good fairies to wave their magic wands and make it alllllll better

Comrade_: In all seriousness, extinction and changes *will still happen whether humans are on the Earth or not. We are a species ourselves and if anything should happen to our species in the future then it'll be part of nature.

*correction: extinction has (& will) happen without the interference of man.
