10 commandments (Page 5)

LiptonCambell
LiptonCambell: Am I the only one who thinks that pushing for inequality, but making it so that each sexes have their own permitted inequalities.....backwards?

It just sounds like wanting your cake and eating it too- you want special treatment, not equality.

Geoff: Finding offence where none is meant leaves you open to attack. It means you get offended by innocent remarks, leading you to alienate those who have no intention of insult. You also give those who intend to instigate verbal assault an easy route of attack.

I agree you didn't. You didn't bring up "Parity"- but you certainly agreed with Geoff sentiments on that topic.

_Nicotina_: Once again, you fail to understand. LC

Geoff, are you saying that I shouldn't find something offensive, just because the person did not intend any offense? That is a poor argument at best.
Those instigating a verbal attack would probably use much more course language than that, anyway.

LiptonCambell: You're right I don't understand. You wish for men and women to be treated equal. It even appears in your "commandment" list, and clearly makes no expections- just equality.

And if thats the case, then why do you agree with someone elses sentiments of not equality, but Parity-Equality.

I'd appreaciate it if you'd make your stance perfectly clear; are you saying complete equality, or an equality where you pick and choose whats "mens" and "womans"

And for the record, the slang I use to refer my sister to is none of your business. If it bothers her, I'm sure she would tell me, and I would stop. Stop being a language czar.

Geoff: No, Nicotina, I'm not telling you to not be offended by unintentional insults. I'm saying you need to use more diplomacy in how you handle them. You were offended by Lipton calling his sister a 'girl'.

Lipton, I'm sure, knows his sister better than you. So either he knows that she would not be offended by such a term, or (in the manner of siblings) he knows exactly how to yank her crank, hence proving my earlier point about leaving yourself open to attack.

And Lipton, I wasn't suggesting special treatment. I was pointing out that there ARE differences between men and women, but that those differences don't affect worth. That men are generally stronger and better at visualisation doesn't make them better people, just as women being generally better at abstract thought and communication doesn't make them better people.

Sorry if I'm not being especially clear. It's early in the morning and I haven't had enough coffee yet.

LiptonCambell: I agree with your statements Geoff- I don't think women deserve less rights or respect than men, or men deserve less rights or respect than women- but I just think you should call a duck a duck- If you're promoting equality, then you should accept that I'm not moving the heavy stuff "just cause I'm a guy"- such sentiments are far worse than being sexist, since its hiding in the guise of being progressive.

If you think that men should be the ones to move the heavy stuff in a move, however, then don't bloody call it equality- cause its not. That means you expect different rules for men than you do for women, and vice versa.

Thats all you have to do. Call it what it is.

Geoff: I've had to give this quite a bit of thought. All the way from home into the office in fact.

And, I can't see that there is a value call in there. There is a division of labour, decided by both biology and (to a lesser degree) social conditioning. But I don't think that value or worth is defined because your sister has pegged you as someone both able and willing to do heavy lifting for her.

Which goes back to my comment about parity not existing, members of each s#* are generally better at different things, but that ability doesn't dictate their worth as a person.

LiptonCambell: I certainly agree that my worth is not defined by my ability to move her couch- I suck at it, to be frank. But, in a move situation, I've noticed men are treated far different from women. I'm not a musclar guy- but in reflection, anything bigger than a chair is usally left to men. Roofing is another example; left to men. I've roofed several times, and if a woman walked up that ladder, it was to see what its like to stand up there- not to pick up a hammer and join in.

There are social distinctions and inequalities- I accept this, and don't propose absolute equality. Again, going back on the intial comment, if Nico didn't mean that men and women should be equal, its a simple matter of stating it. If she meant what she said, though, that means I shouldn't be considered a dick for objecting against social distinctions and inequalities- because, as she said, men and women should be equal.

_Nicotina_
_Nicotina_: equal |ˈēkwəl|
adjective
1 being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value : add equal amounts of water and flour | 1 liter is roughly equal to 1 quart. See note at same .
• (of people) having the same status, rights, or opportunities.
• uniform in application or effect; without discrimination on any grounds : a dedicated campaigner for equal rights.
• evenly or fairly balanced : it was hardly an equal contest.

FYI, I've helped to put a new roof on, refinished wooden flooring, installed interlocking stones, built a dry stone wall, changed the oil in a car, repacked bearings, pushed a car/truck when it broke, repaired the fence etc.
Women and men are not biologically the same. In this case the definition of equal is • (of people) having the same status, rights, or opportunities.

And if everyone in society did as they liked, how long do you think that society would last?

StuckInTheSixties: That's the world they always show in movies that comes after the nuclear apocalypse, the "Mad Max" world.

By the way, several pages of Sevon attempting to support an unsupportable silly argument was pretty entertaining. His fizzling out and resorting to issuing insults instead of argument was pretty predictable, though.

Still, a frustrated, angry, irrational Bible thumper is always good for a few laughs.

Malobear: I am like Geoff I think. When it come to the sexs its many things. How and where you were raised plays a huge part in the person. I have known Women/Girls that could take a hundred pound saddle and throw it over a horses back which if your talking a quarter horse is a dam big horse. But at the same time time I have know some Men/boys that couldnt even pick the saddle up over their head. Everyone knows being raised on a Ranch or Farm compared to the city create very different demands on the person. Some Women are just girly, just like some Men are wimps.
Careful with that Lipton lol,you find some country gal thru an thru, she might whip yer ass and move the couch. lol
Sorry Geoff for topic diversion,I couldnt resist hehe. The commandments in my profile are of the Cherokee. To most Indians there was no such thing as ownership. To most native americans you were just a "tenant". The creator was the guiding light of faith, but the earth was the mother and it was in the faith to take of mother and mother would take care of you.

StuckInTheSixties: If my house is on fire, and I'm lying on the floor unconscious from smoke inhalation, I don't give a shit if the firefighter that picks me up and carries me out of there is a man or woman. But I would care if it was a woman that wasn't strong enough to pick me up and carry me out of there. So long as they can do the job, gender makes no difference to me.

For other occupations that don't require physical accumen, I see no reason why gender should play any role whatsoever, and I think it's a good idea for society to break free, by law if need be (and it is), from the prejudices that exist today. Those prejudices are weakening, but they still exist.
