10 commandments (Page 4) _Nicotina_: Here I was thinking that we were trying to avoid the BUY-BULL! See the beginning of this thread for clarification. hellbhoy: NOW NOW GIRLS let's plat nicely together ha ha. SEVON ... just to clear up there is only one prophecy left in the bible,Jesus said "the coming of the son of man at the end of an age".Christians believe Jesus fulfilled all the old testament prophecies so there ends the old testament prophetically.F%zx knows why revelation is there ??? contradicts Jesus's prophecy and is cryptic nonsense. Instead of asking Lipton to read the bible I suggest you do if you haven't as it sounds like you haven't. hellbhoy: NICOTINA,Was having a laff at LIPTON and SEVON dueling with handbags at 20 paces and throwing insults like wet hankies. _Nicotina_: Please do not call men "girls" if you are trying to insult them, hellboy. It is demeaning towards women. Using "girls" as an insult implies that women are inferior. Edit - spelling. Geoff: I really did want avoid this sort of thing back when I started this thread, "ignoring the religious overtones" were my exact words. I wanted people to come up with their own ideas, not recycle any claptrap. Anyways: Sevon - you display a remarkable lack of understanding in human nature. After reading what you said it became obvious that you didn't read the original qustion, "if you had the chance to dictate 10 guidelines to life to a burgeoning civilisation, what would they be?" 1. A civilisation wouldn't have gotten to the 'burgeoning' stage without already having fully grasped the concept of ownership. Trying to take that away would likely as not end up with you being stoned to death, and your commandments burned. If they were to adopt such an ideal, then they would stagnate. There would be no ambition because there would be no reward (like life for the hoi polloi in the USSR). Not to mention that your civilisation would simply be wiped off the map by the next wandering barbarian horde who have a very clear idea of ownership. 2. In your utopia (and I use that word with no sense of irony), all that I can think is, "in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king." If just one person develops a taste for ownership, the rest of society would become their plaything. Geoff: And I can't help this one: **Puts on his jacket with the leather elbows** Hellbhoy - Revelations is commonly accepted by sophisticated scholars of the bible to be a guideline on rebellion against Rome. It really shouldn't be taken as a prophecy of the end of the world. It is also often said that it was only adopted as part of the NT by the early church due to the eternal fact that those in power have an easier time of things if they instil a little fear in the general populace. Stick and carrot, sort of thing. LiptonCambell: I hope that by "being equals" you mean it. Cause I'm sick of moving my sisters couch. _Nicotina_: Excuse me Soup-Boy. What on earth does you moving your sister's couch have to do with equality of the sexes? LiptonCambell: If I'm expected to move a couch cause my sisters a "girl" and can't lift it- thats inequal. Geoff: I think that's a long standing misconception. There is a difference between equality and parity. Parity is claiming that two things are no different, which in the case of men and women is not the case. Members of each gender generally have their own strengths and weaknesses, which average out to the fact that men are better at some things, while women are better at others. Equality is a value judgement. Whether two things are of equal worth. I personally think that all people are of equal worth, regardless of age, s%y, race; certainly until they prove otherwise. Geoff: If parity existed between the sexes, men and women would compete against each other in athletics. _Nicotina_: Well said, Geoff. Soup-Boy - Unless your sister is not of age, I do believe the correct term is "woman". Geoff: Nicotina, I do think you are getting needlessly hung up on semantics there. Lipton is 25, as I imagine his sister is of a similar age, he's not out of order referring to her as a 'girl'. IMO, it is perfectly acceptable to call any woman under 30 a 'girl', and any man under 30 a 'boy', so long as the person doing it is also in that age range and willing to accept the same treatment. | Philosophy Chat Room 14 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
