Religion (Page 23)

Zanjan
Zanjan: "start with why anyone of us should care."

Because God said so! What else would you expect? Maybe if you got fed up enough with bad behaviour, you might consider how to better teach your kids good behaviour and have them fully absorb it so it doesn't disappear when they become teenagers.

Nobody said anything about teaching a religion in public school. I remember when Christians did that but we kicked them out because they insisted it had to be their religion to the exclusion of all others. They had made the kids feel badly. However, schools do teach some morals today but they're based on the ever-changing societal standards of each generation; these get lower every year.

Thing is, you can't find fault with a consistently high moral standard, only with those who spit on it.

I assure you, one day in the future public schools will be teaching the rudiments of religion - not one religion, but all of them. They won't be pointing out the differences, only the similarities. Naturally, you'll find that hard to believe when all you see is the now.

If you don't care, you don't have a vision of the future. That bleak outlook isn't helpful to pass on to the children.

Zanjan: It's the only way to embrace a universal standard of morality and civilized conduct.

What was considered civilized 4 thousand years ago is not civilized today. There has been progress and, the credit is given to God because humans are so very dependant on others.

Nicotina: Considering some of the “lessons” in the bible, it is hardly a standard of morality for one to aspire to.

Matthew 10:14

14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

If the stars fell
If the stars fell: it was a rhetorical question, we don't care... you are just making bald assertions with nothing to back it up. Long winded speculation and wishful thinking or supreme dictates by fiat don't bolster your argument, they just make you look delusional.

Zanjan: The spiritual laws of all religions are the same - they're timeless. Although everyone understands them, they still have trouble keeping to them.

The social laws, however, change and those become outdated. We can't live like the ancients did and God doesn't expect us to; that's why He keeps sending Messengers, each with a new Book.

WE need God to reaffirm our relationship with Him because we're the weak and forgetful ones. He knows that so He continues to promise He'll never leave us alone.
