solittle: If you re-open a chat window with the same person, there is a chance that the previous chat will still be displayed.

The longer you wait before re-opening the chat, the less likelihood that the previous chat will still be visible. It might last as long as 24 hours, rarely longer.

If it's not still visible, then your remaining option is to explain to the person who sent the picture what happened, and ask them to re-send it.
