I think it’s safe to say that there can be a different approach to the categories in sports for fair play.

It would be nice to have had some transgender people weigh in their views here too.

She has done the procedures to lessen testosterone. It’ll account for why she will be at a low level if competing against males. However, she has an advantage over her female athletes as I take it that she has developed enough.

I’ve read on female athletes expressing their concern which is fair. Esp as the olympics is a life goal and all the training to go through. I also get the trans disappointment.

There should be a realistic approach to reviewing how persons qualify or the categorising. Each sport may be different too. The fairness of a situation matters.

In some trans women, no muscle at all is lost.”
Still, the testosterone advantage, however small, is something Hooven says can’t be ignored. So what’s the solution for trans female athletes?

In 2019, researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand proposed that transwomen athletes compete in their own category, essentially creating a third division for trans and intersex females, to remove any unfair benefit.

Hooven, meanwhile, says she has “no solution.”

“I don’t know how to solve this problem,” she says. “But I do understand that it must be very difficult to identify as a woman, love and excel at sports, but not be able to compete in the women’s category.”

Whatever the answer, she says we must consider the human rights perspective, but science should play an important role.

“Scientific facts can inform our decisions,” Hooven says, “and when it comes to sports, should weigh heavily.”
