Shoot the breeze! (Page 51) Wild__: Canadians complaining about cold weather is almost as annoying as Mexicans complaining about being deported. Wild__: Last time I heard any Americans complaining about diabetes or school shootings was right before they got shot. LoisS: My generation was expected to climb a 30 foot rope with a life saving 2inch thick mat below us. solittle: I was able to climb that rope in kindergarten. I was heading straight for the top, the gym teacher was worried it was too high for me, I suppose he thought I might fall. So he told me to look down so he could signal me when to stop. Every time we climbed the ropes. So I never made it to the top, because I was always looking down for the man to nod for me to stop and climb back down. But that teacher knew I was able to make it to the top, he had to single me out with this special instruction. The first kid in my class to make it to the top was in 2nd grade, two years later. Big fuss was made over that kid, and those that followed him, with cheers and applause. Little heroes of the moment. I was still waiting for personal permission from the teacher to allow me to go to the top. I think that's probably how my fear of heights started. I wasn't at all afraid at 5 or 6. I could have made it easily and safely to the top of the rope, and back down. But now I can't go 15 feet up a ladder without physically freezing up, like a cat up a tree. LoisS: Interesting how child experiences can turn into adult traumas and stay with you. Psychology 101. LoisS: As a kid, Sesame Street taught me the value of education, empathy and kindness....
