Zanjan
Zanjan: A gingernut is a cookie - we call them gingersnaps because they're a bit hot and spicy.

A ginger, on the other hand, is a person with natural red or red-gold hair. If you don't have that colour of hair and someone identifies you as a ginger, that's slang for "effeminate".

Zanjan: By the way, there's nothing wrong with a male showing feminine traits - the macho types are downright brutal and thoughtless. As civilization advances, we'll see less and less of that and more men showing gentleness and sensitivity.

Zanjan: Not since the '70s here. They told me it was a sign to the men that they weren't' available for a relationship......because they were married to God. Then again, I was 5 years old when I asked. Later on, I figured out they were nuns because men weren't interested in them anyway.

No problem, it all worked out for the best.

Zanjan: The concept of removing yourself from the world is antithetical to Islamic belief. Islam doesn't support any form of asceticism. This is not to say there aren't Muslim cranks as a group out there. In that, their fate has been no different than other religions before them.

I don't think it serves any good to look at the differences; rather, one should look at the scriptures and find the oneness of God.

ghostgeek: Is that the cow scriptures or the goat scriptures? There's so many "scriptures" out there it's becoming difficult to know what anyone is talking about.

Zanjan: You see how these city dudes have lost contact with nature!!

Unless born country, parents don't teach their kids about it any more. They learn a bit of biology in school but that isn't the same as applying it and being close to and communicating with living things that aren't human. The parents, themselves, are lucky if they can successfully grow parsley or potatoes, or look after a fish or dog well enough that they don't die prematurely.

The animal names used in scripture used to drum up a whole world of knowledge. As in a single word, like "Jingle ......" we can all finish that phrase.

As you know, the Arabs were not a farming people (farm, as in growing plants) but they were wise to animals and big into trade.

There are 114 Surahs in the Quran ( Islam has only 1 scripture - 1 Book). There's mention of the goat but not as the title of an epistle. Titles: Elephant, Cow (s), Ant, Bee, Spider and Horse, of course. Take your pick......I bet you know Elephant.

Groovius Maximus
Groovius Maximus: I've had a close attachment to Islam, Muslims, and Arabs since serving in the Middle East. The religion's exotic nature is a strong draw, as is the Arabs' unusual, very alien culture. But I like the unusual. It's exciting. In this case it reminds me of the Arabian Nights, frankly. They have a fascinating history, the Arabs. Naturally no society is perfect. We all have our short comings. That is, areas of our societies which could stand for some improvement. But over all I think Islam and Islamic society provides a wonderful and interesting contrast to Christianity and western culture.

Groovius Maximus: Ghostgeek: no one seems exotic when you meet them in line at Walmart. However, if you’ve lived in their lands for any length of time you would understand what I mean by alien and exotic. I found the experience intoxicating, and the people equally so.

hornchurchmale: having had a late father in law who was living and working along many Arabs during second world war etc he was aware different cultures and tribal differentials and practices etc bit like in India where you have. high and lower levels in society etc. he always said tread warily. outwardly very Nice polite etc as a warm welcome is mandatory but essential watch you backs. Not all are trustworthy or in alignment with western values. we will all film our own values and ideas . having worked for decades alongside muslims. sikhs . Chinese etc I find everything person has an individual attitude to western world . only issues seem to be rise of Islamic 'hardliners' in Uk and other places creating the friction. etc sadly deemed to get far worse isn future when they become number one population in uK later in the century.
