Refugees in Canada (Page 2)

Zanjan: "why are you keeping a score card on the religions people hold in your city?"

I'm a bird-watcher - rare birds are a more thrilling sight.

LiptonCambell: >>>We're not stupid and nobody saves other people's lives except God.

In the context, that doesnt make any sense...They aren't being asked to be saved in the afterlife- they're asking to be saved from genocide, starvation, refugee camps, and drowning in the here and now....

And given the numbers you're taking on, around 0.00001% of the refugees, theres not much need for any of them to convert.

Zanjan: Maybe you could pull some strings, Captain. When refugees have no sponsors, the government dispatches them all over the country, according to their own preferences for province. They choose go to the main cities.

Not my fault no Syrian Muslims wanted to come to our town. Could you blame them? Some people just aren't country.

LiptonCambell: i mean, the vast majority have gone to neighbouring muslim nations...converting would make their lives far more complicated. Also would you want someone who converted solely because they would starve to death otherwise?

Zanjan: What does conversion have to do with it? Most people want to feel comfortable in a community of people like themselves, speaking the same language, being familiar with the same things and tastes. They bring baggage with them.

The city I lived in most of my life had neighborhoods called, little China, little Italy, little Germany and such. Those old neighborhoods have disappeared - most of their children were born here. Newer neighborhoods, in the cheap suburbs, are now occupied by East Indians, Pakistanis, and Sikhs. A bit further south is the Middle Eastern community. They've all been here long enough to have built their own House of Worship in the middle of their neighborhood. I expect all, except for the Houses of Worship, will eventually transform into regular or commercialized neighborhoods too.

Few are up to being isolated believers, be they immigrants, refugees or naturalized.

Zanjan: Lipton>>> >>>We're not stupid and nobody saves other people's lives except God......."In the context, that doesnt make any sense..."

It's one thing to save your life; quite another to do it at the expense of your soul.

Have you thought about why other Syrians chose to remain behind? I have - that place is nothing but rubble with their hospitals and schools deliberately being bombed by their own countrymen. Like everyone else, they knew that would happen but they chose to stay. How could one not be afraid every day? Still, they weren't runners, not people who said they wanted a better life, specifically in the richest countries on earth.

Would that be the description of the sort of person *you* are?

Zanjan: I recall the days of the Persian flood to our country during the Iranian Revolution.
They were mostly Baha'is - people who had no plans to go anywhere. You see, they'd been working/visiting outside their country when their government slammed the door in their faces, leaving them without a home, family and place when their visas expired; with no place to go, Canada took them in.

My religious community sponsored them. They were such a gift to us, helping us to comprehend the horror of the cruelties fellow Baha'is in their homeland were enduring. We heard the uncensored, unfiltered accounts, things you don't hear in the news.

Although Baha'is could flee the country if they wanted, they chose to stay. They could dissimulate their faith but they refused. Instead, they bravely faced impossible, heart-breaking conditions, enduring tortures that leave us in awe at the power of their souls!

They stayed because they wanted to make their country a better place through their own example, through love for God and for their fellow man. Not one of them ever picked up a weapon. They believed that was worth risking their lives for.

That they came to us, the way they did, was a divine statement - it was God's way of making Canada a richer place and, the Baha'i community here more knowledgeable. Undoubtedly, that principle works across the board.

Captain Canada: I'm just going to skip to the next topic because the way this one going if I say anything that the government rushed into bringing these refugees without a clue where to house, educate and to locate these poor souls I will be labeled a racist
If I address it that they have no rights to pick and choose where they wish where they want to be located because of religion and other reasons to be close to their countrymen I will be called a racist
Enjoy folks

Zanjan: No, you'll probably be called paranoid.

They've all found homes now, except a few of the new ones coming in. The government rushed because Canadians asked them to; we needed to take the pressure off the European countries, which were overwhelmed.

The Canadian government doesn't care what their religion is but woe betide those refugees who chose to go to the USA - I think they jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. Richest country on earth couldn't afford to take in more than a handful. That's probably because the USA is so deep in debt.

calybonos: Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Canada the place that used to be called the Island of Misfit Toys, and was discovered by Yukon Cornelius, a midget dentist and a reindeer with a sinus problem?

And if I'm not mistaken, it was already full of refugees.

LiptonCambell: Fair question Cap'....not too easy to explain, but the short version is, all my disposable income in caught up in a vehicle and other expenses....plus there would be unseen expenses that'd force me to move slower(appliances to purchase, homeowners taxes, id prob have to take out a mortgage, ect)- maybe once i get through this hurdle....

Captain Canada: Mr LiptonCambell a vast majority of the Canadian population is infected with the same economic suffering
Maybe you earn too little or you could be within your provincial minimum wage income level or maybe you just overpaying income taxes that limits your plans in becoming a homeowner
So Mr Lipton I am assuming that you are like a individual within my circle of coworkers that drives a 100 grant automobile paying 750 bucks and 460 insurance per month because he claim it's his dream car but lives in a runned down trailer home without basic essentials

Zanjan: Wouldn't a bicycle have been a better investment? I'm fixing up our old bike in the shed right now - hasn't been ridden in 12 years. Going to donate it to one of the refugees who just got a new job. Only needs a bit of grease and new tires cause mice got at them. Cheaper than tires for a car.

A 3 thousand dollar car eats more in replacement parts and repairs than it does in gas. Having been the owner of many used vehicles, I recall the times they sat parked while I hailed a ride from a friend. That's how I learned to tow properly - before the "road-worthy vehicle" law was legislated.

Nevertheless, I'm sure your new purchase will bring you lots of excitement and great stories to share.

Zanjan: One of the new refugees arrived 3 days ago, an 18 year old fella who looks more like 28 to me. He arrived late at night; the next day, he spent all day helping with branding cattle.....in the rain. Young people are so excited about change! He now loves dodge trucks.

There he was at church, being introduced. They gave him a guitar to play along with the hymns - man, what a talent!! He didn't use a pik either. Education is different in Syria - he'd spent two years in university, studying music and hopes to complete his degree here. That's going to be a bit tricky but we'll find a way to help make that happen. What an asset!

There's so much enthusiasm in the community right now, it's as if everyone suddenly came alive with so much to do. It's hard to say who's deriving the greatest benefit - the refugee or the community. This lad's sister and parents are arriving in 9 days - more thrills.

Captain Canada: Congratulations on your new wheels Mr Lipton
With all those government service fees to get them cars on the road just insane
It's just ridiculous the amount of service fees plus the taxes we pay to own something

Hopefully Miss Zanjan those new bike tires will cost less than a brand new bike
And maybe when weather gets nasty your community will buy the young lad a Dodge Ram truck cuz kinda hard riding a bicycle in the winter time

If you interested in buying a Dodge Ram diesel fully loaded with upgrades I have one sitting in the driveway for a year or so that I don't need any more
Just let me know eh

Zanjan: I can see why - diesel makes my eyes burn and lungs close up. Wanna sell the tires? My truck needs them soon - will cost about $1,500 new but I got 12 years out of the current set so, good deal. A vehicle is only as good as its tires - I'd never scrimp on those.

The bike tires will cost $20-30 each. It's a 21 speed mountain bike with shock absorbers. Our town plows its roads, eh. It didnt have to do that at all last winter, what with El Nino keeping the asphalt nice and steamy. He can buy his own winter tires with studs - two haircuts and they're paid for. He's a strong young man and his wife will love his legs.
