The Earth is overpopulated? jjanet: The earth is over populated and i appreciate people who decide not to have children. Sometimes society puts on a moral pressure for people to procreate which only increases the already over populated world we live in. Big Bopper: The desirable areas of the earth are inhabited. There is a large percentage of the Earth that would be unpleasant for most of us people. Big Bopper: 'Overpopulation' is an interesting phenomenon. The necessities of life are few, but critical: water, food, waste disposal, and a warm or cool, level place to sleep. Many of us in North America have more than we need...even those of us with a lower income level. Do I want to share my abundance? I won't be opening my own Immigration Office anytime soon. Dorkencakes: I heard that shore birds are starting to nest on the huge floating trash island in the southern Pacific so new habitat is being born. Some of them eat the trash and die though. I guess it's mostly floating plastic. Big Bopper: I don't really think of immigration as a problem. My Mom is an immigrant, and my father's parents were immigrants. And two or three generations before that, every caucasian in North America was an immigrant. Yes, 'overpopulation' was a big factor in the decision made by these people to come to North America. It may have been lack of space, lack of a way to earn a living, or it may have been oppression or other political factor that pushed them into trying to improve their lives by coming here. In any case, immigrants are a big part of what makes our country strong. (Edited by Big Bopper) Dorkencakes: I saw you got lots of rain recently. I'm seeing a lot of that in recent years on TV and the news, all over the world it's happening it seems. Maybe the climate is changing rapidly now because there are too many people. I think maybe the scientists are right about it. It makes sense when you think about it. A warmer Earth means less ice, more water, more rain and rising oceans. Big Bopper: We had two rainstroms in the past two weeks. It rained heavily, but nothing extreme. The past two winters were drier than average and that's a good thing, except for the snow pack on the ski hill. The lake system our water is drawn from is 70 miles long with a huge water shed, but it needs snow pack, too. Some cold and wet weather for a few months would be good so I can get a few days of skiing in! Where do you live, Mate? Are those Dolly Varden in the smoker? What type of fish can you catch there? Dorkencakes: Hi Big Bopper! I'm from Colorado. "Dolly Varden" is a term I've not heard since I lived in Idaho, a subspecies of brook trout if I remember correctly. The ones in the smoker are kokanee, pretty good on a toasted bagel with cream, red onion, tomato slice and some capers! I really love to fish. Dorkencakes: It was really great, I loved it. It's a true story you know? Honestly the audio I'd give five stars out of ten but the story is absolutely remarkable. Check out that link.... LiptonCambell: I don't believe overpopulation is a huge issue...in many countries, if not for immigration, the population would be going down....traditionally, if your population is educated and well off, you hold off on having kids- which is why populations in less well off countries are out of control, and populations in first world countries tend to be a slow growth, if not decline(like Japan) Immigration and education solves all of this. If we increase peoples knowledge, give them greater opportunities, and have the over-populated areas the freedom to move, should they wish, then things tend to balance themselves out. | Off Topic Chat Room Similar Conversations |
