Military spending is not as simple as 'we spend this and they spend that' Britain spends more money than France and Germany on Defence, but both France and Germany have way more effective Armies, the reason is Britain, like the U.S. is covering more spectrums of potential threat than Germany and France. Some folks say the U.S. Army and Marines would benefit from more money for exercises to improve their familiarity with battlefield conditions and handling of weapons on those conditions. An example. We remember the brave sacrifice of American boys who were killed trying to rescue their fellow Americans in Iran, a desert dust storm blew sand into the turbines of the Sea Stallions and jammed their engines. The Sea Stallions spiraled out of control and crashed, it was a tragic end to a courageous mission. Sure it is a winner having the best Marines in the world, having the best helicopters, but The U.S. Navy and Army need to put that equipment through it's paces in any potential weather conditions they may face, and that means plenty of practice and travelling to training grounds. Some service girls and boys say they just do have the funding for as much training as they would like. A war is 'won and lost long before it is fought' as the saying goes. And no am not a 'chicken hawk' . I think the best way to keep peace is for U.S. to deter any aggressive bully, and the best way to do that is to be smarter and better equipped than the bully. Edit: There are many countries who have not engaged in war recently (a good thing) and in recent times war is a different playing field with guerrilla-style and other non-traditional tactics. But again, Russia and China get better by the day. The Russian Navy also has a curious habit of saving America when the chips are down for Americans. Russian warships sailed into San Francisco and New York to defend those cities from a suspected opportunistic attack by Britain and France during the U.S. Civil War. Also the it was a Russian, or Soviet ship however you see it, that saved the U.S.S. Liberty during the friendly fire incident. The Russian ship saw the Liberty being bombed and strafed and said 'what the hell is going on here' ? the Russian boys steamed at full speed towards the Liberty. It was probably then the IDF realised their mistake and stopped their attack when they saw the Russian ship plowing at top steam through the waves towards the stricken Liberty. There was also a touching occurrence in New York City when Russian Sailors went ashore to meet New York Civic Leaders in 1863. The Russian boys were so shocked at the poverty they saw in New York that the sailors had a collection of money among themselves and donated it to New York homeless people.
