chronology
chronology: Like davidk says the 1960s is remembered as the most thrilling decade ever, but there was a sting in the tail of the 1960s. American families had begun their love affair with personal household debt in the 1950s but between 1963 and 1966 household debt in the U.S. almost doubled. This was fuelled by all those enticing consumer goods in U.S. Stores and more Americans than ever seeing 'Education' as the road to a better future. For most it was, but for very many it was not and they were left with bills to pay.

Officially the 1950s were the best years ever for Americans of all classes, (if you can overlook the air and water pollution that ravaged the U.S. from coast to coast) . People today talk about loss of manufacturing in the U.S. in the 1950s the U.S. had a staggering 30pc of the entire worlds industrial production in the country, no nation ever had such a huge dominance of global industry.

But like david says, in the late 60s were the years of pop music, brilliant T.V. shows and full employment. david was in San Francisco at the time, and San Francisco was the place to be in the 1960s, and California dominated the world culture of the 1960s.

Great memories, but hey some pretty serious problems were growing across the nation and most people were ignoring them.

Chrono is too kind. He is absolutely 100% jealous. It was the summer of love for many years but what really screwed it up was the drugs. LSD destroyed thousands of lives, heroin was also doing immense damage as well in the black ghettos of America.

The Viet Nam war, the deaths of JFK, Bobby, and MLK were also horrific to the summer of love mentality. The country went crazy for awhile with riots in Watts and at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Kent State, Oakland and the Black Panthers, Patty Hearst and the SLA, Watergate, as well as the shooter in the tower in Texas. Crazy times. However, we survived those years as well. Mom came out of the house and into the workforce in droves leaving millions of kids as "latch-key" children.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latchkey_kid

Stay at home Moms used to have cookies and milk ready when the kiddies came home after school. Then homework, play outside for a couple of hours, dinner, and then Rocky and Bullwinkle and bedtime at 7.

But when mom burned her bra and went into the workforce, the kids came home and they had to fend for themselves and dinner was the new TV dinner craze created specifically for two working parents.

American Culture of the 60's and 70's dramatically changed in many ways....for the good...and for the bad.

chronology
chronology: david. Don't forget the U.S. Standard of living doubled for the vast majority of Americans from 1950 to 1970 and unemployment fell to record low levels.

You left out a shadow side of the 'summer of love' the epidemic of STDs . Am not either criticizing the lifestyle or endorsing it, none of my business what people do with their sex lives, but volunteer health workers who visited the hippy communes said some of them were almost all infected with syphilis and gonorrhea. The problem was made worse with the Pill. Women never worried about men not wearing condoms and were being infected with all the partner swapping.

But hey, they left out the sounds of men and women howling with pain when they urinated and seeing all the sores and rashes that broke out as the syphilis spread through their bodies when they made all those explicit documentaries about hippy lifestyles.

chronology
chronology: The 80s was an era of wage gauging, union busting, human rights violations, and slash and cut at public services. It was as if the Swastika was flying high over most countries.
The U.S. Congress managed to support most Civil Rights, but it was still a dark period. The 90s were little better.

harlett daeava: wasn't it in the 1920's when Europe had what they called artist festivals and folks had all manners of sex on the streets with whom ever how ever etc etc etc etc..wonder whose idea it was to end those must have been a jolly good time

chronology
chronology: Harlet never hear of that. But in Europe at that time naturism became really popular. Bus loads of people would go from town's into the countryside and everyone would strip naked and play games like running and gymnastics. Men women and kids would all just play naked together.

Don't know if they all had sex but I would doubt it.

calybonos:
Decade.

[ˈdekād]

Noun

A period of ten years.

Being a guy, and so, not having to deal with menstruating, I wouldn't know, but still..

I'd think that any period lasting ten years would be way too long to be called the best.
