chronology: Russia is loosing the AIDS war.

While in most countries AIDS is declining, in Russia the Virus is increasing it's victims every year. Last year 20000 Russians died of AIDS . Around 400000 Russian's have died of AIDS related illnesses.

Heterosexuals and needle using drug user's are the main groups in the rising infection number's. 'At the moment it is an epidemic, but it is turning into a health crisis' said one specialist AIDS worker.

Part of the problem is Russia is a conservative country at heart. They see AIDS victims as low life's getting their just deserts.
Expert's on AIDS say Russia's proposed plans to stop the spread of the illness is not going to work. There needs to be more public awareness in Russia of the AIDS problem, and more resources allocated to tackling the spread of the virus. Right now infection rates are rising every day and few people in Russia seem bothered about this.

Well the Web is buzzing with accusations and counter accusations about why a Senior Google Research Executive has left the company.

Google are only saying that they never dismissed the Executive, only that they chose not to meet a list of demands she made as a condition of her staying with the company.

Some are claiming that the Executive was sacked but Google have insisted that she was not sacked, they felt they could not comply with her demands as conditions which she would accept as acceptable to stay.

Staff in Silicon Valley are taking sides in the dispute, hundreds of Google employees have signed letters of support for the woman concerned.

As all this is happening in the very brain of the Internet which reaches into every corner of the world let's hope everyone settles down and there's no bad feelings.

chronology: This date in 2017 Australia legalized Gay Marriage.

To put it mildly, Australian folks were strongly divided on the subject of Gay marriage. Australian's still hold a sentimental view of Australia as a streight forward, Church going, regular, country. The view of Gay marriage was it was just too weird to be accepted in Australia.
The debate before the decision to legalise Gay marriage was one of Australia's most vitriolic debates. A former Prime Minister was head butted in the face, other people demonstrating for legalisation were called 'qeer b*stards' and beaten up by Anti legalisation demonstrators. But the vote was passed.

Gay married couples in Australia now enjoy full civil rights and welfare benefits. But many Australian's are still uncomfortable with the law. 'The law was passed despite the will of the people of Australia, not because of the will of Australians, look at how they made that Bill law' they lament.

chronology: Armand Hammer dies this date in 1990.

Most media stories about Mr Hammer always focus on his younger days. The kid from New York City who arrived in the New Soviet Union and wheeled and dealed between Moscow and New York.

But Mr Hammer's real world was the world of Big Oil. It was Lybia, not Russia that set him firmly on the world stage. With Oil supplies ever precarious in the 1950s, any new Oil Fields were mesmerising the Big Oil companies, and when vast, easy to extract Oil Fields were discovered in Lybia, Mr Hammer with his Occidental Petroleum company was quick to tender for the Rights to pump Oil from them. His knowledge of wheeling and dealing in the cut throat Oil contract business was learned back in the 1920s when he acted as go between for The Soviet's and Germany in trying arrange for Germany to have supplies of Russian Oil. It never worked out, no deals were signed, but the kid from the Bronx gained a foot in the door of the exclusive Oil Trading business. He would use his Oil Trading knowledge to win vast wealth and power in the 1960s. He became the biggest exporter of Lybian Oil, supplying a quarter of all Europe's Oil.

Mr Hammer has been the target for extreme criticism by many people who accuse him of everything from being a Communist Spy to hypocrite. But he is enigmatically referred to by some in the Oil Business as a' mysterious old Walnut' .

Blackshoes:
As the president of a large union once told me

Bernies people came to us and requested that we put 100's of millions of our pension fund into Bernie's hands. I asked you knew better?
He replied, No that's not why we didn't invest ', Our financial lawyers simply stated that his number were too good to be true!
It's impossible to have all gains and no losses in the market
Then he mentioned an old quote, I had heard many years before

" Liars don't figure and figures don't lie "

Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, which bankrupted thousands, worked so well because no one knows how to read financial records

" Bernie Madoff. Ah, Madoff; the man with a Dickensian name and a Shakespearean persona, who apparently staged a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme all on his own, without ever letting on to his brother or sons, who worked in his office, or his wife, who allegedly checked his books. Even the feeders who recruited clients for him were as innocent as newborn babes. And so Madoff alone was convicted last month of bankrupting thousands of people after a strikingly swift trial. So far, only $1.2bn has been recovered. No doubt Bernie is squirrelling the rest up his prison-issued jumpsuit.

Vanity Fair recently published an extraordinary interview with Madoff's former secretary, Eleanor Squillari, who contacted the magazine because, she said, few had bothered to talk to her. "I'm the secretary . . . I must know things! Doesn't anyone want to talk to me?" she recalls shouting at the investigators raiding the Madoff offices. Actually, it turns out that she didn't, she credibly claims, know anything, despite having worked for the man for 25 years. This is not a dig at Squillari – after all, the US Securities and Exchange Commission, bafflingly, never noticed anything was amiss either.

The root problem here, as with the other current financial disasters, is that most people don't know how to read financial records and are easily cowed by supposed experts' obfuscation. But the recent crash has surely proved that these experts often know, at best, nothing. I spoke to one man who had been contacted by one of Madoff's innocent feeders several years ago, suggesting he might like to bank with their guy. "And how does Madoff invest the money?" he asked. "Oh, don't worry about that," was the blithe reply. He never heard from them again. This would almost be funny if it didn't suggest that a lot of other people simply handed over their cash. There was an acronym on 80s Wall Street that investment banks used to put next to names of certain investors – WDIS, standing for the only question these clients would ask: "Where do I sign?"

Gordon Brown – prime minister during the financial crash, chancellor of the exchequer leading up to it – should know better than anyone that the obvious step would be to make understanding finance part of the national curriculum, because this is the stuff the world is built on and small misunderstandings build up to a big ol' mess that affects everyone. Not once have those hours of mastering sin, cos and tan in school come into use since finishing my maths GCSE; learning how to look for financial irregularities, compare mortgages, maybe even understanding stocks and bonds could have been a lot more useful. Of course, this is about as likely to happen as recovering Madoff's missing billions, seeing as if we all understood these things then we would see how badly we'd all been bamboozled. And who would want that?"

chronology: Interesting blackie. But it seems Bernie was helped more than anything by 911. After that event regulator's in DC and New York were stunned for year's afterwards trying to catch up with a mountain of work created by the destruction of the WTC. The huge piles of accounting data had to be gone over page by page. Civil Servants in Washington and New York probably just fell into their armchairs at home and fell asleep there and then. But still people were calling for'me first' arrangements to have their compensation money approved. You understand people need help, but even Washington can't just hand people cheque's without approving them. One person who received compensation was Mr Trump. He was given 140000 dollars'stay in New York', money. He returned the favour by calling Washington DC 'the Swamp' later when he ran for President.

So you can see how Bernie slipped through the defence's against that kind of crime.

Bernie himself explained that the fact Authorities were so distracted at the time gave him a chance to just keep going over and over. He said 'when you get away with something once, you do it again. And again, and again' . He became addicted. Just depositing Billions of dollars into his account.

chronology: Legacy Inquests begin in Northern Ireland.

Inquests into the death's of around 50 civilians shot dead by British Troops in Northern Ireland began in Belfast last week. Her Honour Mr's Justice Keegan is presiding over the present Inquest after preliminary hearings to assess if standards were satisfactory during the present Covid circumstances.

The Inquest being held at the moment is hearing statements on the death of a young man in County Tyrone in 1974. The young man was shot dead as he ran away from a Army Patrol that called at a farm he worked on. There had been shorts fired at troops near the farm a few days before. Troops approached the young man to ask him questions about the shooting. The man's brother said he called at the farm shortly after the troops arrived and found his brother lying dead in a field. He said the soldiers were laughing and joking and excited by something. One soldier said to him 'am sorry it was an accident' . He said another soldier then threatened the soldier who spoke to him saying 'keep your f*cking mouth shut you are going to get us into trouble' .

The soldiers told Police Officers who questioned them about the mans death that they shot him when he ran away as they approached him. A soldier being accused of shooting the man said he never shot at him, he only fired warning shots. It is possible that another soldier fired similar warning shots but accidentally shot him.

The dead man's brother said his brother was afraid of soldiers and probably panicked and ran away.

The Inquest continues in Belfast.

chronology: Kingsmill Massacre culprit's still unknown.

The 1976 mass murder of 12 Ulstermen at Kingsmill is still a painful memory to the Unionist Community in Northern Ireland. The final verdict by Legal Authorities in Northern Ireland is that members of the IRA carried out the cold blooded killing of the 12 Protestant worker's forced off a small bus in a country lane on their way home from work.
The IRA has always insisted it had no part in the killings and at the time publicly condemned the sectarian murders as totally unexceptable.

The murders were claimed to have been retaliation for murder's of Catholics a few days before hand.

A survivor of the murders tells of hearing the leader of the gang who stopped the bus and organised the killings as having a'clipped English accent' . This was the same description of a unified man involved in the Miami Show band murder's. Some suggest it is possible the same man organised both murder scenes.

The most down to earth explanation of the tragic killing of the innocent Unionists was that they were victims of a vigilante gang acting without knowledge or permission of the IRA. The IRA had previously sent out memos to member's in the district that it would not tolerate sectarian killings of Unionists under any circumstances.
But for some researchers the Kingsmill tragedy seems beyond a vigilante explanation. They say it was too big a crime and too well organized. They say the IRA would have investigated the crime themselves and put the culprits on Trial if they found them.

For the long suffering families of the victims there is still no real closure to their distress. Just conspiracy theories.

chronology: A long nap.

Sometimes people who disappear create a genuine mystery. There are endless theories about why a man or woman just vanished. But often years later the answer to the riddle is found unexpectedly.

When a No Frills supermarket employee vanished police in Iowa were frankly bewildered. But 10 years later the mystery was solved when the empty building the supermarket used to be in was undergoing renovations.

He had never left Iowa at all. In fact he never left work. His body was discovered behind a walk in cooler at his work place. Detectives have concluded he snuck up to the top of the cooler where staff would go to take unofficial naps and somehow rolled over into a 18 inch wide gap at the back of the cooler.
Noise from the condensers in the cooler would have shielded any calls for help had made and sadly he died there. Examination of his body showed no sign of violence, it was just a sad accident.

It is not uncommon for people to be undiscovered right where they disappear. In England a mental patient vanished from an hospital but was found 10 years literally lying in the grass 100 feet from the hospital. An empty bottle of vodka was among his remains.

chronology: HMS Thetiis

When HMS Thetiis had a rough first test dive there was no real drama. It was 1939 and new submarines never worked properly first time around. But when she failed to surface it was clear she was experiencing more than teething trouble. Her bow had slammed into the mud and she was half flooded after a latch malfunction. But her commanders managed to part raise the boat and her aft section was partly above water. The crew were alive and banging on the Hull. It was just time till they could be rescued. But then the navy took control of the rescue from the salvage crews and began to consider how to recover the boat.

Salvage crew members began protesting that it would take less than a hour to cut air holes in the side of the sub, and in a few hours a bigger hole could be cut to get the crew out of the sub from the aft section above water. We will think about it, said the Navy. No air holes were cut or escape holes cut. All 100 men on board slowly suffocated.

It was 60 years later that documents were discovered that explained why no holes were cut in the Thetiis. If they had been they would have permanently weakened the Hull.

The documents never said 'save the sub not the crew'. But as one researcher said, there is no other way to interpret the Navy's action.

Weeks later, the Thetiis was beeched, Hull in tact, and 100 bodies of the dead sailors taken off.
