chronology: Mr Trump never came near being impeachment.

President Trump along with Mr Clinton and Mr Nixon were all targeted for impeachment, but virtually everyone agrees their charges were politically motivated. But one President who was impeached was definitely at the centre of a political storm that looked like bringing Washington DC to a cross roads. Andrew Johnson.

In a nutshell young Republicans had gathered statements and evidence of what they believed were serious war crimes by the South during the Civil War. U.S. Troops and Black people had been victims of unlawful killings the charges read and the United States Government intended to take the accusations to a court of law. However President Johnson refused to prosecute the charges presented to him. Republican Politicians hit the roof. They began the most disruptive political period Washington DC has ever seen. The President came within one vote of being removed from office.

Why did Mr Johnson refuse to prosecute accused War Criminals? America's Establishment was divided into two camps. One was inclined to allow the courts to have the cases heard. But the other side insisted that this would wreck the fragile concord achieved after the war. The very future of the nation was at risk.

In the end the faction that insisted that the national unity was more important than war crimes trials won. But the atmosphere in Washington DC was toxic for years afterwards.

In comparison, Mr Trump, Mr Clinton and Mr Nixon seem almost completely trivial.

chronology: How Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs brought down Hollywood.

In 1938 one of the most popular topics of conversation amongst American's was the drab films that Hollywood had produced in recent years. But in that year Walt Disney released his Movie about Snow White and folks flocked to see the cartoon . It became a huge success. But the Disney movie highlighted a situation in the American Movie Industry about just how Movies were produced and distributed.

This date in 1938 the U.S. Justice Department began proceedings against the Big Hollywood Studios that controlled the Movie Industry citing what it claimed was violations of the Sherman Anti Trust Act.
Sen John Sherman had created the Law years before to stop Monopoly control of American Business in Interstate commerce. He was the brother of Civil War General Sherman.

It took ten years of legal debate but in 1948 led to the break up of the American Film Industry into a new Production and distribution system.

chronology: Janis Joplin lesbian lover says she was not to blame for her death.

When news reached Port Arthur Texas that Janis Joplin had died in San Francisco few residents were surprised. Janis, a Texas Gal from the Town, had alienated many of her former Texas friends with her wild lifestyle of drugs sex and rock and roll.
Even in the 1980s many Texans in Port Arthur still distanced their Town from the Rocker. But it seems Texans like everyone else had the wrong image of Janis. It seems Janis had a long lesbian relationship with a number of women. The night before she died she had been visiting a lesbian lover in the woman's hotel room. The next day she was dead from a heroin overdose. Her lover was a long term heroin addict.

For people who love to blame people '2 plus 2 equals 4' Janis visits her junkie friend, next day Janis is dead from an overdose, equals friend is to blame. But the woman insists even today she had nothing to do with the overdose. She says Janis did visit her in her hotel, she was taking heroin at the time but Janis never used any. On the way out of the hotel Janis met the womans drug supplier calling with heroin for her. She says Janis must have decided to buy some on impulse as she passed the dealer. But I had nothing to do with Janis getting back on smack she insists.

Today folks in Port Arthur are more forgiving towards Janis. The town has seen many hard times since Janis left. But some folks in Port Arthur will still shake their heads when hearing of Janis Joplin last day. 'casual sex, drunken binges on whiskey, heroin, pot, is it any wonder she died' they would reflect.

But for the ex lover of Janis she still meets people who accuse her of getting Janis back on smack.

chronology: The former 'Workshop of the world' may soon have no steel industry.

Britain was once called the workshop of the world, the nation manufactured everything from pins to airplanes. But the nation reached a milestone some years ago when the last mining pit for coal was closed. Now Britain seems set to all but end the manufacturing of steel.

While some folks bemoan yet another seemingly gloomy statistic, most people don't seem concerned.

The most curious statistic was that of Britain's Merchant Marine. 50 years ago Britain had 300.000 merchant sailors. Today there are fewer than 1000.

Every single year for the last 50 the manufacturing section of Britain's Industry has recorded a steady decline. By comparison, the U.S. has actually set new records for manufacturing.

A strong sector of the U.S. manufacturing is it's aircraft industry. Which today is stronger than ever and seems set to stay so.

Britain relies mostly on Banking as a business activity. One concern over Brexit is that Banks may move out of Britain if the financial climate is not attractive.

chronology: Look squirrel what is that video supposed to prove?

Most of us older folks can remember the Cold War. There was this high stress and hostility between America and Russia. They were ignoring each other and refusing to cooperate on anything.

Well how do you explain the memories of some folks in Texas who remember working with German scientists brought over after the war to the U.S. . Whenever they were stuck on some projects and could not find an answer they would drive over to Mexico and send a letter to an old friend, a friend who was now working for Russia. The two German scientists would swap ideas and hopefully brainstorm their problems. Other scientists did the same.

But wait a minute, what about all those movies at the time showing Americans and Russians refusing to even sit at the same diplomatic table's,?

What indeed squirrel, what indeed. I wouldn't take your video too seriously squirrel.

What developed into the worst rioting in the history of the United States began as a obscure incident in a distinct of the city where local people where partying at an unlicensed night club. After being cautioned by Detroit PD Officers the crowd gathered at the Party drifted away but began looting local stores. The looting spread to other districts and soon the city of Detroit was resembling a War Zone. President Johnson ordered Federal Troops into the City but stipulated restraint by the U.S. Army in restraining the riotors.
Federal Troops were under strict orders not to load their rifles unless given orders to do so. No Civilians were shot by Federal Troops, which must be a outstanding achievement given the scale of the riot. 12 people were shot by National Guardsmen.
A total of 7000 people were arrested.

chronology: Most folks know that Gallilieo was the first to see the Rings of Saturn. But was he really.

According to recent discoveries in Assyrian tablet writing's it seems fairly certain that ancient Astronomers in Babylon were aware of the Rings of Saturn. But there is no reference to Saturn the Babylonian Astronomers were apparently noting the moons of Jupiter. It seems unlikely that the Babylonian star gazers could see the moons of Jupiter and notice the Saturn Ring systems.

We know ancient people had lenses. Around 1000 BC Egyptian kings used lenses for spectacles. Ancient Greeks also used lenses, probably in engraving. But the Babylonian Astronomers were the most advanced at the time.

So why no mention of the rings? They probably never saw them as noteworthy. Keep in mind that the Babylonian Astronomers only worked with around 20 times magnification lenses.

Zanjan: Back to the Mesopotamian astronomy - everybody has seen the ancient Summerian tablet engraved with the planets of our solar system (dated 4 - 5,000 years ago). They ask, how did they know how many planets there were?

They didn't know. The engraving isn't of our solar system - the "sun" is the Light of God, and the spheres represent "Worlds of God" - that is, the number of religions left to the end spiritual cycle.

chronology: Interesting Zan as ever. But the Assyrian Tablet records in the British Museum do seem to refer to the moons of Jupiter which can only be seen with small telescopes at least.

I would not argue with scholars on their opinion that Assyria had only crude viewing devices. I think NASA siggest the Babylonian astronomers used a large lense with another lense set about 6 feet away. Folks at NASA believe in the clear sharp dark places in ancient Babylon you would not need a telescope tube.

I don't know Zan. I have looked at the moons of Jupiter through a telescope of 100 times magnification and they stand out around the planet. Any less magnification and they are difficult to see. Any greater magnification and they are difficult to find. So to me anyway the Assyrians must have had more developed instruments than NASA presume. NASA believe that the magnification of the Babylonian lenses was arround 4 times. You cannot see Jupiter's moons with such small magnification.

Zanjan: I think we're talking about different tablets. There's at least 2 thousand years between the Assyrians and the Sumerians - they not the same people. The Babylonians descended from the Sumerians, who had the earliest civilization, the first to use cuneiform.

No one can speak the Sumerian language. The Babylonians only knew of 5 planets.

chronology: This date in 1908 a major step in the development of what would become The FBI takes place in Washington with the creation of the Department of Investigation.

Congress had resisted the creation of a National Police Force citing concerns over the possibility of a Secret Police similar to European countries. But an argument among Oregon politicians had become vitriolic in Washington DC regarding the sale of lands in the State of land for use by Railroads. Logging companies had secretly hired drunks in Taverns to sign up for cheap forest land which in fact would be owned by the logging companies. A dispute among a number of Oregon Officials led to accusations being made in Washington DC that eventually led to the Department of Investigation being created. The Department took over from a National Police Investigation Agency which was formed by Police Chiefs to share information on know criminals and anarchists.

Among fans of the FBI there is a story told of how Mr J Edgar Hoover would later carry boxes of finger prints into FBI Offices thus creating the FBIs now famous Records Department. In fact the new Department of Investigation obtained it's first batch of finger prints from the Police Chiefs organisations. The Police Chiefs got their first collection of finger prints from the Pinkerton Agency. So the story of Mr Hoover huffing and puffing and struggling with boxes of prints may have been true but Mr Hoover was just using old Pinkerton records.
