Serabi: Huge debate on the radio this morning. The manufacturing has started and the poor men are cringing at the moment.

Debate:-

I just read a post on facey about an anti-rape device. The fact that women might want to insert a weapon into their vagina for protection makes me hate the world, but I think the production and call for availability of the device is worthy of debate.

To explain, the device is called Rapex. Designed by Sonnet Ehlers inspired in a region of South Africa where the significance of sexual violence against women is horrifyingly high, the device is inserted by the wearer like a tampon. On the inside,it’s hollow but studded with tiny sharp barbs. If the wearer is raped, the device impales the rapist and causes the perpetrator serious and lasting damage to the penis. It can only be removed surgically. Wow.

Firstly, I am not sure that it constitutes an anti-rape device because penetration has to take place for the device to be effective, but the comments as per usual made me think more than the post itself. The device has evoked a huge debate because it obviously is a drastic step towards protecting women in these regions. The crux of what makes rapex work is not that it causes pain to the perpetrator but importantly for the victim is that it BUYS YOU TIME TO RUN.

Many remarked they thought it could be misused by some types of women. Is this really a reason to prohibit the use, especially in a region where acts of sexual violence have become prolific? After all, isn't the device an active step in defying the misuse of sex? What do you think?

Rapex: fighting rape with brutal force

A new anti-rape contraceptive could soon hit the shelves of American pharmacies.

It is a truncated condom with rows of razor sharp hooks on the inside. These hooks latch onto a rapist's penis upon penetration and must be removed by a doctor. The contraceptive is similar to a tampon in regards to comfort and visibility, as well as the fact that it is inserted and removed with an applicator.

Rapex has sparked some debate among feminists, who see this device as similar to requiring women to wear chastity belts. For me, the difference is that women are given a choice to wear Rapex, whereas chastity belts were often imposed.

Rape has become endemic in South Africa, so a medical technician named Sonette Ehlers developed a product that immediately gathered national attention there. Ehlers had never forgotten a rape victim telling her forlornly, “If only I had teeth down there.”

Some time afterward, a man came into the hospital where Ehlers works in excruciating pain because his penis was stuck in his pants zipper.
Ehlers merged those images and came up with a product she called Rapex. It resembles a tube, with barbs inside. The woman inserts it like a tampon, with an applicator, and any man who tries to rape the woman impales himself on the barbs and must go to an emergency room to have the Rapex removed.

When critics complained that it was a medieval punishment, Ehlers replied tersely, “A medieval device for a medieval deed.”

OCD_OCD: Interesting concept, isn't it? Fighting brutality with a bit of like-kind brutality. I suppose it would work well as long as there wasn't more than one attacker, but if it was a group then the female would be seriously out of luck. I suppose she'd be seriously out of luck anyway, right?

Geoff: I think it is a good idea.

Unfortunately (in the UK at least), there are plentiful documented cases of women using the accusation of rape as a weapon.

While this doesn't in any way alleviate the horror and repugnancy of rape - I can see this being used as an offensive weapon in the wrong hands

OCD_OCD: Women in the US use it also, just like they always accuse their husbands of being a pedophile during a divorce. It's a filthy thing to do.

I'm all for women who do that having to spend the same amount of time in jail as their innocent male victims would have had to had they succeeded. The law, however, seems to feel differently about it.

R E B E C C A: well this topic soon got turned around and being about women who cry rape we're only on page one.

Geoff thinks its a good idea we all insert plastic bottles with razors into ourselves How about we put one up your arse n then you can tell us wot a great idea it is!

"Unfortunately (in the UK at least), there are plentiful documented cases of women using the accusation of rape as a weapon." How do you know Geoff are you an expert? Have you seen these documents? Clearly not or you'd know that in order to get a rape suspect to court there has to be "sufficient evidence". N that means enough to get a conviction n without that its very unlikely to make it court.

Sure there's those who cry rape but very very rarely does it go to court let alone get a conviction......the number of rape cases thrown out of court due to insufficient evidence is much higher that does not mean the woman wasn't raped. The estimated number of rapes that dont ever get reported to the police is far higher than than that small group of women you speak of.

"The problem is that women who use such a disgusting approach to relationships end up making it far more difficult for women who really do suffer rape to achieve justice." absolute bullshit Geoff, domestic violence is on on the increase in this country and as ever is suffered primarily by women.

This topic, regardless of how ridiculous that idea is, was about women being raped, not about a small minority who cry rape. N i wouldnt ever insert a device to chop off a dick why....because in reality a rapist would only make the woman put her own hand up first.....Doh That was obviously a joke!

N when i say sisterhood im speaking of other women not me personally the vast majority of women who report a rape will have been raped you, as another woman should be more concerned.about their injustices...because it could happen to you.

Rapists are not brain trusts?? That doesnt make sense rape happens in all classes, creeds, religions etc its got nothing to do with intelligence at all. The biggest factor is weather they think they will get away with it or not. N thats the real problem South Africa....Rape isn't really considered as being wrong!
