Seeing how the VAST majority of Africa's slaves were in fact sent to South America, and a small
percentage came here to North America....It makes me wonder

Do internet political threads about election results in Brazil (for instance) go off topic too?

Azathoth: Yeah, slavery wasn't only an American problem...it was global, many times in human history.

I fear that my mention of slavery maps has diverted the point of the OP. I merely offered it as to say a certain mentality still exists that isn't far removed from before and during the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. Sorry, Pigcatcher, I didn't intend for it to go off topic.

Azathoth: Again, Harlett:

trav·es·ty (trv-st)
n. pl. trav·es·ties
1. An exaggerated or grotesque imitation, such as a parody of a literary work.
2. A debased or grotesque likeness: a travesty of justice.

The 2nd definition here. It was my word choice and it fits. It was a grotesque likeness of what slaveowners and politicians deemed justice.

harlett anathema: travesty means to disguise.......plain and simple ......what your trying to argue.. is a travesty of understanding how to debate personal opinions differences and perspective..

that is not saying ... i am not fully aware of how our world leaders are all corrupt and are practicing very deceptive politics..........world wide.....that.....we all will suffer the consequences for....

Azathoth: I copied and pasted the word, Harlett. It means what it says. I did not just contrive the definition from my own ideas. Webster's may have a different definition of it. I got it online. This is all beside the point.

Of course nefarious governments and politics have held us all back...and even driven away real evolution. That doesn't mean we have to give up on progress of thought and law.

Instead of you guys repeating over and over and over again, why not give us some ideas on how to solve the problem.

There's a thought for you.

harlett anathema: we all realize back in the day there was, as there is, in here at Wire a fierce desire to compete for what ever...back in the day....men worked for near to no reward...mattered not the color of their skin.. so when more so called free men entered the arena a fierce competitive-ness broke out....any one wanna discuss how women were treated...when all this racism began...it's not like we can't talk about the words Men have used at one another...

The minds of MEN aren't notorious for being humane....so perhaps the solution is too first .... farm their sperm then kill them all......

Azathoth: I'm not sure how to change things, like racism, without an end to that kind of thought. How easy could that be? Would we have to force legislation against bigotry? I suppose there are already legislative perameteres to do so. The Civil Rights Laws come to mind. Also, the Hate Crimes Laws are there. I just don't believe that those did or will put a total, permanent end to racism. Maybe (and this will seem rough) we only need to wait on the more racist generations to to die off...along with their mind sets. Good question, Pigcatcher. One I don't think I can fully answer, unfortunately.

calybonos: I wonder why Obama is constantly referred to as Americas first black president.

Not only because I don't believe it makes a difference what color or race you are here in the
melting pot,but also because I think it's odd that the majority of people consider him to BE black.
He is bi-racial,which means to call him black would be as inaccurate as lableing him white.

That would be the same thing as...lets say...a chinese father, and an australian aborigine mother
having a child, and lableing him/her strickly chinese or aborigine.

Republican,Democrat,white,black,christian,jewish,man,woman,blue-collar,white collar...

The world is a filling cabinet....where do YOU fit?
And is that ALL that you are?

Azathoth: Only want to offer recent demographic info that was released post-election. Maybe it could be possible to find a solution, if we see the statistics. Though, numbers alone likely won't change anything. Here's some of the recent "breakdown" :

Therefore, much of the data evolves from what voters tell exit-pollsters about who they actually voted for and why. ShawnXx: 51% of the population is female and women account for 53% of the electorate, leaving men at only 47%. Only in the past few elections has women's turnout exceeded men. Exit polls showed 55% of women voted for Obama compared to 45% of men. I'm not gonna give all the percentages of unmarried women, married women, or race but he and Romney both targeted women and Obama was a better choice for women.
