Thread Crapping. Wireclub Admin: Forum 'thread crapping' will result in a 24 hour suspension. Thread crapping: v. Thread crapping occurs when a person comes into a thread and posts something contrary to the spirit/intent of the thread, often derailing the discussion or turning it into an argument. Wireclub Admin: Please be respectful and stick to the topic of each particular thread. If you wish to discuss something other than the topic at hand you are welcome to create a new thread in order to do so. calybonos: uh oh! I'm dangerously close to wandering off topic. I hope Rod makes allowances for retarded pigs. MichaeI: I'll have to be careful myself. I have disorganized thinking and can start out talking about the topic and then veer off into talking about rainbows and puppies. calybonos: Disorganized thinking.....yeah,thats what I meant to say too. I was just trying to impress everyone by using the same fancy term my psychiatrist said to me. I LostInTheSeventies: Well, THIS is just going to totally destroy forums! On the other hand, I can now safely post a thread of Latin translations of Boxcar Willie songs. LostInTheSeventies: I like the part about "spirit" of the thread. It's very Halloweenish. Also, it gives wicked leeway to posters, because "spirit" can be construed in so many ways. Wireclub Admin: It’s unavoidable that some threads will naturally veer off of the original topic. Reasonable deviations from a topic's starting point are allowed, deliberate thread-crapping for the purpose of derailing the discussion or turning it into an argument, however, is not.
duncan124: What about that a guy that just posts the BS flag ? That must be a form of Thread Crapping? Fruitbat1919: I can appreciate the intent behind condemning 'thread-crapping'. I struggle with how that could really be enforced. My reasons are due mainly to the subjective nature of many of the posts in 'Off Topic'. It has long been my held belief that a large proportion of those that post in off topic, do so with the wish to engage in (here I will loosely call it) banter. This 'banter' may have ulterior motives that are slightly dubious in nature, but on the whole are what puts the fun into 'Off Topic' topics. One of the problems with having Off Topic, is that people want their topic to...shall we say...cultivate interest. What is the point of a topic, unless others join in. If said topic is a debate, what is the point without counter argument? So most will use Off Topic, to promote their topic. The major problem then stems from what Off Topic is really being used for....is it debate? Hmmmm, I seriously cannot remember the last true debate on Off Topic.....so what are we using it for? I'm sure many will disagree with the following, but this is what I truly believe we deep down use Off Topic for: Ego Stroking: to give ourselves certain 'good for us' emotional stimulus, that bolsters our ego. It is very much the 'Look at me' syndrome.....we all do it, but we choose different ways to achieve the same effects. Some may seek to show intelligence, some seek to show control....some just seek to hurt others. With the above in mind and if considered true, we could extend from this a 'need' is being shown by the majority that use Off Topic. This need, a need to express our, let us call it 'Online Wire Ego' is therefore part of what makes Off Topic, an interesting and diverse place. I believe that while well intentioned, seeking to keep Off Topic on topic, would therefore have a negative impact. So, I have outlined (in a slightly convoluted way due to it being early here way lol) my thoughts behind and problems perceived here with what I believe may happen. That in itself, is not really fair to the original post...I am just whining if I leave it without positive input.... ....so my suggestion, is to segregate the topic areas. To this end, it could be made clear that any 'thread crapping' would not be tolerated in any other areas of Wire. Off Topic, or another created area, could be left for those that would like to keep a looser stance on 'thread crapping', within the usual guidelines of Wire, of course...... ??? So, I have outlined w Stewart75: You probably don't know it, or intended it to be............ though that's pretty funny Duncan........... RUBY: What Rod means is if we're talking about a topic and a user drops in with sarcastic comants leading to an arguement will be suspended no warnings ..so becareful before you type LuCiD_: I think its an awesome idea. There are too many folks who go on a particular thread to cause nothing but trouble...well said Rod and thanks for the thumbs up twice on the other thread Stewart75: I think we have enough "created areas" Dave........... and it's not rocket science working out when a topic is put in place for serious discussion.............. Stewart himself has started many threads......... some are obviously intended for serious discussion............... however others I've started are for the sole purpose of livening the place up.......... as nothing gets Wire going better an e-fight or two............... you know it, I know it.......... we all know it................. though generally people don't wanna admit it............... RUBY: forums are made for debates so nothing wrong if an arguement would rise but staying on topic..we all can have dif opinions but if someone goes on a thread discussing things out of topic just to cause arguements it's wrong and we'll take action clear? Fruitbat1919: I agree Stew, mostly it is 'not rocket science', though some are highly subjective. People complain about there being 'favourites' or 'those protected'...or 'some rules for others'...I believe that my idea would give clarity and those that then still desire to take the risks involved in participating within a certain area, would have clear choices. Are you talking about yourself as 'Stewart himself'? If you are, I believe my term 'banter', may be your 'e-fight'....see it is all more subjective then I believe you try to state. | Off Topic Chat Room Similar Conversations |
