Ethics online. SleepAwake: In my ethics of representation class I am doing my final essay on anonymity on the internet. The internet is the first anonymous social space and thusly has created a new type of digital, virtual, and well...ephemeral social realm. I am interested in getting feedback from all of you on the ethical implications of this "internet culture" in regards to personal anonymity. I am also conducting a discussion in a gallery space on the same topic, and any feedback, or discourse would be muchly appreciated for research. Thanks guys <3 Mystical Autumn: ...don't blahahahaha me...in 4 years I have never seen you troll, which is why I found it so funny. Bahahaha, you rarely venture into forums even. In reply to the OP...we may "think" we are anonymous but I would venture a guess that our IP's would give us away if the call arises for anyone to know "who" we are. SleepAwake: mystical i am not asking about the nature of anonymity online, more about how one acts online when removed from their actual physical identity, not just in a wireclub context, but everything from what one watches, or looks up, or says, or creates online. the constructed self that we create as our online persona (not as in a "fake" but as humans we have multiples selves and persona in different social situation (job interview, work, with friends, with family etc...) and our online persona just being one of these social realms that has an added level of anonymity and distance) does one watch things online or discuss things online or do things online that they would not consider ethical in real life. Eaton Busche: I'm pretty real online. Food and vag..............really what makes the world go round. stopdropngo: For me, I am pretty much myself online, I like to be out going and fun outside of the internet as well. I think its easier to be a little more daring when not face to face with someone and people can get carried away with the rude comments and what not sometimes too. I think online persona can help bring someone out of their own comfort level at times. I've been on wire before for hours at a time and had some of the best conversations and best laughs that I've had in a long time. Does that help any? Also, I keep to being as close to my ethical beliefs online as I would in "real life" KelticWarrior: its sorta impossible to know how genuine people are being, like the internet is a differenrt register, a different frame, so even if you insist on being the same as offline youve already highlighted the distinction...anonymity or not, you still face similar issues to the ones Goffman talks about in his presentation of the self KelticWarrior: I'm so angry at you for outsourcing ur college work online, but damn its a good idea u crafty proto-capitalist you Mystical Autumn: Over the years I have been here...lots of ppl do. I think it it is all rather interesting | Off Topic Chat Room Similar Conversations |
