Here are the real facts One bar....... 1) You don't like Thailand, you don't like Thai's. Ok......Acceptable......it's not for everybody. 2) You state....... Farangs get charged much more than Thais (housing and utility bills, for example). the reality..... total fabrication. Never for housing, utilities, food, transportation, etc. etc. A farang can get a 2 bedroom condo with a seaview here with all the amenities for as low as Thai baht 3,900.00 or about US$130.00 per month. As for tourist attractions only.....I'm a farang and get charged the same as any Thai........what you are thinking of is at some of the tourist attractions only having 2 sets of prices........keywords being SOME and TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ONLY.......tourist price and locals price. Has nothing to do with you being a Farang.......just show them a local id or drivers license and you get the locals price. And, this is only practiced pretty much in the exclusive resorts only. certainly NOT in normal, everyday Thai life. 3) you state....... Thais also rip off farangs at any opportunity - this is ingrained into their culture and Thais are famous for it. Thais generally regard farangs as being stupid, unclean and not to be trusted - they are told this from a young age and anyone who's worked as a teacher in Thailand will confirm this. the reality......... totally untrue........of course there are exceptions. There are exceptions in every country. All countries have a criminal element. Why should Thailand be any different? But, for the most part, Farangs are highly respected here, treated kind and courteous and the Thai's will go the extra mile making sure that the farang is happy. Customer service here is exceptional. 4) you state........ The baht behind every smile goes without saying: just go to Thailand and experience being pestered for baht at every opportunity - even the monks are at it (one approached me in the street and pestered me to buy a joss stick for 2000B). the truth...... I don't believe it.........in all my years here, I have never seen it happen. 5) you state.......... Observe elephants being whipped to 'behave' for tourists or simply visit a zoo to see much worse. the reply...... we've been over animal abuse many a times.......it happens in every country. 6) you state......... Downs Syndrome sufferers are outcast to fend for themselves (something to do with them 'deserving being disabled' my reply........ total fabrication.........I have lived here for many years and I am actively involved in many causes and charities. The disabled are very well taken care of in Thailand. 7) you state........ and nearly every nice white sandy beach has a stream of sewage pumping openly through its middle into the sea. Thailand is third world and shows no sign of improvement. my reply....... pity you didn't take any pictures of that........I sure would of. I guarantee you that type of thing would have made CNN and the BBC, no doubt. Gotta say........I go to the beach almost every other day.........never saw it. 8) you say......... These are facts and anyone who tries to dismiss them either hasn't lived in Thailand or is lying. the reply........ See above for all replies......I speak Thai btw, do you? I have worked in Thailand for a number of years. Have you? My family is in Thailand as well.....is yours? 9) Bottom line.......I am sorry that you were unfortunate enough to experience the bad side of Thailand. although the bad people are very much a minority, they none the less exist. I have a saying that I live by....maybe you should adopt it as well..... .......when you go to a foreign country......don't check your brains at the border then all will be fine. Perhaps then, you're experience may have been a most pleasant one. My thinking is that you came here looking for work.......couldn't get a visa or a work permit because you weren't qualified......spent most of your 6000 pounds trying.........became disgruntled and angry when you failed.......and hence, Thailand then became a bad experience for you. Shit, if that was me, I'd be mad too. Except I wouldn't come to a foreign country with only 6,000 pounds and not knowing the rules, the laws, the culture, the language. perhaps that was your first mistake. Again, sorry you had such a bad time here.....but Myself, my family, my many friends (all faranfg btw) just love it here and would never consider living anywhere else....... We know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On a realistic note...........the so called girls in the sex industry in Thailand that some of you feel are being exploited because they have no money......... 1) prostituion is a worldwide problem......not just a Thai problem. 2) These girls make not including their salaries even about 2-3,000 baht per night in tips and services. They make a percentage of the bar fine just to get them out of the bar. They make a percentage of any drinks that the farang buys for them. They get a percentage of the tips. They get a base salary of between 8-10,000 baht per month......and they get anywhere between 1-2 thousand baht for every trick that they turn. That's about 100,000 baht per month. If their expences are less than 10,000 per month, that leaves 90,000 per month banked. That's more than most of you earn in the West. Too feel so bad for these girls.......they're rich, they're professionals, definately not amateurs. One thing One bar was correct about......the hookers here look at the farang like Buffalo ready to be slaughtered. I wish I could be so exploited. 3) The sex industry is an extremely tiny minority industry in Thailand, as it is in any other country in the world.
