Braden: We have brought back online search, but we will be adjusting it so that people who do not want to appear there can opt-out.

FalconCawFalcon: Braden means serious business, people!

So why not just make it an option that when people appear offline, they can't be found in search? Seems like a pretty obvious fix to me.

Comrade_: ...and how will you adjust for people who are online and don't want to be found in search, Caw?

In the old wire there was an option to appear online yet not on the search, think that is what they're working on, which makes more sense than "having to appear offline to not be in search"....

FalconCawFalcon: Why bother appearing online in the first place if you don't want to be searched for? People are gonna find you anyway whether they use search or not. I think some people are just wusses.

Nicotina2: Do you really think an underage person would not change their age?
Parents are attempting to be diligent and make sure the sites available to their children are NOT adult sites, probably by way of filters.
A parent might be monitoring their child's activities on line and Wire shows as a 13+ site when it's pretty clear by many of the profile comments that it is not suitable for 13 yr olds.
Admin just says they (children) are here anyway and leave it at that. That is not a good enough reason.
I'm sure it has a lot more to do with revenue than anything else.

WhispersMist: Chat sites are only an arena for bullying, like the school lunch hall or the playground. No one is trying to ban 13+ from those places.

Some fear that children are prey for paedophiles, advertisers and other baddies on chatsites: again, does your kid travel alone, or go to a shopping centre without you? Most children do, from the time they go to secondary school. And just as you teach them the rules for staying safe when they're out and about alone, so you teach them the rules for staying safe online.

Chat sites are apart of todays lifestyle, which is connecting with others. When children are young, we supervise them: as they get older, we trust them to connect without us around all the time. And what Chat sites do teach our kids is a language that will undoubtedly be crucial to their future: because today's children are going to be interacting online with friends and, in the future, business colleagues and customers, for the rest of their lives. Why, when we're trying to educate them in useful skills on other fronts, hold them back on this one?

Makes sense to me though.

Nicotina2: 13 yr olds are so good at following rules too.
The danger of pedophiles on line is much greater than in public.

Sure, have children chatting with their peers.

Wire was marketed as an adult site and is now a 13+ site... that is where the true problem lies.
