Spelling... ohbloodyhell: Im fairly new to these particular forums but I have just spent a while scrolling thru. Why is it that people go out of their way to spell as if they have no education? Isnt it harder to 'dumb' yourself down and miss spell than it is to spell correctly?? I just dont get it. Sables: we all make mistakes that is for sure, but if that was the worst to ever happen in this world.... ohbloodyhell: Im not referring to the occasional mistake or typo, Sables. If you read what I wrote, I was referring to those who purposely spell incorectly. katy: Chat and Texting have their own shorthand language which is fast becoming mainstream, so you better start getting used to it. IMHO its gr8 lol hav fun w. it StuckInTheSixties: It's related to the use of devices for "texting." Those devices don't have keyboards that can be used with all ten fingers in the sense that a computer keyboard can. The typing is usually done with the two thumbs. Because of that, typing is far more awkward and less efficient than regular ten-finger typing. This has created a number of conventions that have become "acceptable" practice amongst those who text: ~ the use of severe abbreviations that reduce the number of keystrokes. Some of them are standard conventions, such as "u" for "you," "r" for "are", etc. ~ the usage of acronyms, such as "brb" for "be right back," "lol" for "laughing out loud," etc. Those aren't misspellings. Those are purposeful reductions in the number of keystrokes needed to convey an idea, and aren't really intellectual shortcomings. But there is a very insidious, harmful aspect of texting, as well. With texting, there are only two concerns that rule tyrannically over all others. With texting, all that matters is that it can be understood, and that the number of keystrokes be minimized. This means that as long as it can be understood, there is no need for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. if u msspel wurds fail 2 punkuate or use ne srt of gramr it dsnt mater as long as u can red the mesage tht is al tht is mportnt In a perfect world, texters would be able to shift back and forth between modes of expression, texting one moment, and writing with literacy the next. But unfortunately, that doesn't seem to happen. Texting seems to have affected the CONCERN for literacy in many people. It has become their primary writing/typing activity and they simply no longer a shit about whether or not they're capable of communication with any measure of literacy. Illiterate communication has become an accepted norm. There's no longer a stigma attached to mangling one's language. Sad. Sables: sorry if I misunderstood, I didn't realize you were talking about what is referred to as "text" lingo, I think it is laziness myself, but who am I to judge. ohbloodyhell: I wasnt actually referring to texting. I was referring to typing in forums.I understand the concept of shortening words in a text message basically for me it's to fit my message in ONE message. Its difficult for me to take anyone's opinion seriously when they 'dumb themselves down' and type their words like a t%~w. Im just curious as to why these individuals feel the need to do it. StuckInTheSixties: I'm not bothered by a word like "t~x~." But I'd be bothered if it was misspelled. (laughs) Tink: OBH, welcome to Wire. I used to wonder the same thing. Then last Sunday I bought a new toy It is a tablet. It is awesome. The one thing that really is hard getting used to though is the keypad. I did buy a keyboard to go with it, but I don't always have it with me. Another thing I noticed, it doesn't offer spell check. Not that I am a terrible speller but I do rely (after all these years) on the spell check to catch my mishaps. Funny considering I did all my college papers on an old fashion typewriter. Hahaha, I don't miss the white out though ✯ ℓυcΐ∂ ♡: Text speak in my opinion is the most ignorant thing one can do...it shows a complete lack of education and its downright lazy. ✯ ℓυcΐ∂ ♡: My cell phone has an app that spell checks...not that I use my cell phone to browse on the net.
Tink: My tablet doesn't But if you have any idea how to get spell check...I'm there. I'm still learning how to use it though so perhaps I will come across it. lol ✯ ℓυcΐ∂ ♡: Are you talking about an Ipad? I think some of those apps are downloadable. My eldest boy has one...will ask him when he comes home. ✯ ℓυcΐ∂ ♡: Spell checkers are amusing though...most are American and in Australia a lot of words are spelled differently and you type something, you get the little red line underneath but you know that the word you just typed was spelled correctly lol StuckInTheSixties: Yeah, you weirdos insist on including an unnecessary "u" in quite a few words, while us rational Yankees are far more economic and logical, and leave that sucker out. StuckInTheSixties: See? What's the purpose of that dumbass "u"? Do you guys pronounce it "coloooooooor"? ✯ ℓυcΐ∂ ♡: Americans are not always correct either...this is the way kids at school are educated in Australia...this is the way we spell. | Off Topic Chat Room Similar Conversations |
