Lesson for you today: 1) Lavendar ask for the simplest explanation of the offside rule. your response: "-Forward of the last defender........ when the ball is passed forward....... that person is then offside............." Wrong, the person is 'then offside' the moment they are lingering behind the defender and the goal keeper while the ball is in play (doesn't need to be passed to them). That is the offside position. "-They don't need to receive the ball........ offside is called when the ball is passed, not when it is received.........." Wrong. There are situations when offside offence is called when the person receives the ball physically, a lines man will have to determine most of the play (that is where the mix up happens). On tv (I'm sure you might glimpse your knowledge of offside from there) you will see him calling offside when the other person kicks the ball but that offside was not determined by the other team mate who is onside passing the ball, that offside was determined from the person who was offside being active and going to receive the ball (be it running ahead of a defender to get it or waiting in the offside position to receive it). Take into consideration that the player can be deemed as inactive and maybe running back to an onside position and not going after the ball. All decisions goes back to the linesman. Bottom line the player who is offside, must be active. -"..... the player does not need to receive the ball.......... ............ offside is called when the ball is passed, not when it is received.........." Offside can be called when the player physically receives the ball while on an offside position. For instance, you have a group players around the box, some are onside but one player runs to go offside to receive the ball that is kicked (it may not be kicked specifically to him) My definition to Lavendar is the simplest way to say it, the bottom line of an offside offence and the most definite way to call an offside.
