I Found The Exit
I Found The Exit: One-year school suspensions were handed down Friday to four seventh-graders who were accused of bullying a bus monitor in Greece, N.Y., in a case that led to hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to the 68-year-old woman.

The Greece Central School District said the four boys and their parents agreed to the punishment, NBC station WHEC of Rochester reported.

The bullying was captured on video, posted on the Internet and triggered widespread outrage, but was followed by an effort to raise a little money to send Karen Klein on a nice vacation. That might turn out to be a real nice vacation: By Friday afternoon, the “Lets Give Karen – The bus monitor – H Klein A Vacation!” campaign on Indiegogo.com, a site devoted to raising money for various causes, had raised $667,000.

"This is definitely the highest-grossing and fastest-grossing campaign we've ever seen," Indiegogo.com spokesperson Rose Levy told msnbc.com last week.

WHEC reported that during the one-year suspension, each student will attend an alternative program at the district’s reengagement center. They will also be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will also have to complete a formal program in bullying prevention, respect and responsibility.

Robot Seb: I think their punishment is a bit extreme but at the same time, it will help people realize this kind of behavior isn't ok especially to elderly people.

When I was in school, the worst that happened was either a 5-day suspension, or the next step which was being expelled which hardly happened, and was usually for drug related issues. Back then bullying was not nearly as bad as it is now.

fairgojustsaying: I thought the punishment was adequate and had there not been publicity they may have only got a short suspension and no idea they had done anything wrong and to continue to think it was fun to do what they did. I'm sure this punishment will make them really think about their actions.

MichaeI: I think that all the public pressure and outrage made the punishment so severe. If they went on the lighter side of the spectrum on this, the public outcry would have been overwhelming.

Not only that but it sends a message to other people, not just to the kids themselves, what kind of punishment they likely would be facing if this kind of behavior happens. I like the message that it is sending.

Wait, what? I haven't followed this for a while, but why does this woman need donations? Was she planning on getting legal advice or something?

Sarcastic Dots: People are going to take this the wrong way, but if what you're saying is right, then that's some pretty misplaced charity. I feel for her, but not to the point where I'd donate to her more than Cancer Research or Oxfam.

Sarcastic Dots: If indiegogo is anything like kickstarter, then the website takes 30% of the donations.

Oh, it's no where near as bad. I found it:

How much does Indiegogo cost?
Indiegogo is free to join. There is a fee on any money that is raised, which is 4% of the money you raise if you meet your goal or 9% if you do not meet your goal. For more on fees, see our article: Pricing & Fees

Still.

~LoisLane~
~LoisLane~: I agree OCD, it was nice of people to even think about donating some money for the women just out of wanting to help...(most people think money is the trick and most times it is..) Maybe to help her retire faster to get out of that school? She said she is "not retiring because of the kids...she loves children." How sweet of her.
