Classical Music Composers

Lumpenproletariat
Lumpenproletariat:

From Baroque to Ragtime, Bach to Scott Joplin. Whatever you want to say about the classical composers. "Classical" is very inclusive, for our purpose here, but does not include Rock 'n Roll or Hip Hop or Rap. But includes 20th century composers like Irving Berlin, Philip Glass, Gustav Holst, etc.

For now I will mainly focus on producing a long list of composers, from A-Z, as an easy reference guide to all the famous composers (and eventually maybe a few not-so-famous ones). But anyone who likes "classical" music is welcome to post anything you want to say on this general topic.

I listen to YouTube for music, but I hate the commercials that barge in. I have to develop tricks to avoid that. By going to "Bing" instead, I can avoid the commercials a little better.

revision 4/27/25

Just found a website which might be better than YouTube or Bing. Internet Archive --- definitely has much of the good classical music. One drawback though: Some of the recordings are very old, probably recorded from LPs, and there are some scratches, pops, etc.

Even so, I'd rather put up with a little of that noise than the obscene commercials breaking in on me in YouTube/Bing. But I'll keep checking around for more music sources without commercials. I could pay a small monthly price, but not $10 -- too much.

GOOD MUSIC ONLINE, FREE, NON-COMMERCIAL

Maybe there's a general lack of this, for much good music. I.e., you either have to subscribe to a "platform" like YouTube and pay the $10 or more per month in order to get the good music you want, or you have to put up with obnoxious commercials, which often barge in on your music, loud, shouting voices which insult you and detract you from the good music you really want.

BUT, there are ways to find some good music which is free and without any commercials.

I will give here some examples of what I have found. I'll add much to this list, as I find more examples. So far, the best hope for this is what I've found in Internet Archive. Here there is the problem that much of the recordings are very old and seem to be taken from the LP records back in the 60s, and some are even in mono rather than stereo, and this is a major difference in the quality of the music.

So in my suggestions I will list only the good quality recordings, without the "snap crackle pop" noises. I first found that Internet Archive (I.A.) had the Schubert symphonies all together in one place, and I could listen to any I wanted, but for this group there were some of those hideous noises from the bad quality. It seems most of I.A. recordings go back to the 50s and 60s.

But the next composer I checked is Bruckner, and here I.A. has a much better collection -- all 9 Bruckner symphonies, all good quality, good stereo, no noises, and you can easily navigate from one symphony to another, pick out the one you want to listen to.

https://archive.org/details/5-01-symphony-no.-5-in-b-flat-major/1-01+Symphony+No.1+in+C+Minor%2C+WAB+1.mp3 --- if need be, copy and paste this into your address box. This gets you to the page which has all 9 Bruckner symphonies listed, and you can click which one you want to listen to.

I'll add more to this as I check I.A. more and more for music. I.A. must be a good source for works of music and movies and literature etc. Occasionally they also have good versions of old movies, probably some movie "classics" they thought needed to be preserved.

I'm listening to the Bruckner symphonies right now (and in a moment the Thom Hartmann program begins), but later I'll also check on other composers, and I'll start a list here of good classics available on I.A. And I'll revise this post to keep adding more to it.

INTERNET ARCHIVE --- Good recordings of classical music
All free, no commercials

I'll just add to the list as I find more and more. Most of the I. A. recordings are too-low quality. But I'll just give a listing of good ones here. There's plenty. This is a good place to get lots of good music recordings free and without commercials. I'll just list these alphabetically by composer. Much more to add later --- this is just to start. The url is given, there's no "link" -- so just copy & paste the url into your address box.
