anym: Oh and while I'm on about Eric Bogle:

"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" .... 'Never knew there was worse things than dyin' ,,, I thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me.'

"The Green Fields of France" (sung by the Furies) ... 'It all happened again and again and again - and again and again and .... '

Then there's John McCutcheon's "Christmas in the Trenches." ,,,, 'Whose family have I got fixed in my sights? .... On each end of the rifle we're the same.'

anym: A bit off topic but:

I remember seeing Paul Simon and his wife doing an acapella duet of "Blue Eyes Cryin'.. " Their harmony and the blend of their voices was among the sweetest things I've ever heard. He sat center stage on a high stool and she stood beside him, I think. I remember this as being part of Willie Nelson's 60th birthday celebration but that can't be right - when I search online all I come up with is the three of them singing it together, with three guitars; really nice but it doesn't match up to the beautiful blend of unaccompanied voices I remember.

I'm a big fan of acapella harmony and if anyone can point me to a recording of the performance I recall, I'd be really grateful.

anym: "What song can bring you to tears" - brings to mind a very old joke.

At a vocal recital while the tenor sang "Carry me Back to Old Virginny" (I said it was an OLD joke!) he saw two coloured gents weeping in the front row. During the intermission he met them in the foyer and said "I noticed you crying when I sang about "Old Virginny." Are you perhaps Virginians?"

"No. We're musicians."
