BEATLES KICK ASS (Page 2) Stinks_theSockPuppet: Yeah, I like when groups break up because everyone thinks they're so hot on their own. Years later they get back together because no one bought them as solo artists. Of course, that wasn't the case with the Beatles. I read The Beatles by Bob Spitz and it covers all the things you're referring to, but that still doesn't take away from the music. What they laid down in the studio is far bigger than anything in their personal lives. TofuMacca: Okay first of all,When Lennon was in The Beatles, that was his main frustration that people weren't listening to the music.Like when they played Shea, people were to busy screaming to listen to their music.Thats half the reason why they quit the road and became studio artists. As for judging him about his womanizing and lack of caring of Julian, thus making him a douchbag or whatever,is a horrible way to label a person.Especially a person who fought for peace and a better place.I know what he did to Cyn and Julian was terrible, but don't judge him because of that.Seriously,he even regretted hurting the two when he got with Yoko. kmzu21: I'm not disputing the quality of the Beatles' or John Lennon's music. That would be foolish. And I suppose calling someone a d-bag could be construed as horrible on some over-sensitive level, but the fact remains that even if he was sorry, he did not amend his behavior. I'm simply pointing out his hypocrisy and the unrealistic message he was selling people with dreams of Utopia. It's kind of funny that calling someone a dick who acted like one is somehow less forgivable than the things the dick did. kmzu21: And as far as fighting goes, he sat in bed with Yoko and wrote some touching lyrics. There are people who genuinely make a difference through hard work rather than making bank and putting none of that money to effective use in enforcing the things they believe. The most John Lennon did was inspire Wireclub members to argue what a good, peace-loving man he was. Stinks_theSockPuppet: Well, that being the case, we'd have to give some crap to MJ and Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis and..damn almost everyone There was a reason they came up with the phrase "s%@, drugs and rock and roll". TofuMacca: I'm not a fan of John Lennon and what he did outside of the music shouldn't affect people. It's the music that counts.Whatever he did in his personal time was his business and therefore he shouldn't be judged for. So what if he was a dick? I'm sure he's entitled to being a dick just like you and me.So what if he was a bad father, husband and band mate, who gives a shit really. It's his music that lives on not his flaws. Stinks_theSockPuppet: "On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley paid a visit to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House in Washington, D.C. The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit with the President and suggesting that he be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs." And then he died of a drug overdose... Stinks_theSockPuppet: And Sinatra was in tight with the Kennedys, who were fighting against mob control of the unions, but Sinatra had mob contacts. kmzu21: I'm not defending any artist's hypocrisy. This post was about the Beatles, and I touched only briefly on the quality of his music long enough to say it would be silly to call it anything less than good. I care what kind of person he was. He has my respect, but it's not for the reasons other people give it to him. I'm not sure why you guys are offended by this. It interests me that Lennon is being defended on the basis of other people's shortcomings. IamEggman: Can you tell me of any great astist who wasnt, according to your thinking, a dick? I doubt it. And most artists are idealists. Romantic or political. Lennon sang about possibilities. As did Dylan. As for making money, that was simply due to popularity. what he did with the money, we dont really know, how much and to whom he gave. Stinks_theSockPuppet: Man, all these musical hypocrites. It's VERY disappointing. Next thing they'll be saying the Osmonds are cannibals or smoked cannabis or shot cannonballs at their neighbors. Or Pat Boone...What has Pat Boone done? kmzu21: This post is not about great artists in general. It's about the Beatles, and John Lennon was one of its most popular members. kmzu21: If the Osmonds were indeed cannibals, that would make for a very interesting post. I suppose someone would bring up what a dick John Lennon was in their defense. Stinks_theSockPuppet: Well, actually, it doesn't matter one way or another. People listen to music because they like it. The topic of this thread was Beatles Kick Azz. Being a forum, people would naturally respond "Yes, they do" or "No, they don't". SOMEONE came in with the John Lennon is a d-bag thing... No, I won't mention any names TofuMacca: but it seems that John's always put on the plank for these kinds of situations. What about Paul,Ringo and George? What about Paul being egotisical, trying to run the band, going to the papers in 1970 about leaving The Beatles and continuing on to go to court about it? What about his flaws? But i guess this is about JOHN LENNON and what he's done. kmzu21: Okay, you convinced me. All of the Beatles suck. Their music was great, but they all sucked. Success! I'm sorry I did not respond appropriately. But for someone who doesn't care, you're expending a lot of energy for my entertainment. Stinks_theSockPuppet: I didn't say I didn't care, though it's true There's nothing much happening in General Chat and Religion confuses me...so music looked good. Stinks_theSockPuppet: Solo-wise, Paul is the guy. John kept letting Yoko sing on his albums. Well, singing might be too kind a word. What do you call it when you run your fingernails across a chalkboard? TofuMacca: Paul is my favourite. And he too like the rest of them had issues,y'know. So my point is,if your gonna bring up one member of The Beatles and their problems, might as well bring up the rest. IamEggman: The point i was making is that you can call any artist a dick for the way they have behaved in their private lives. You made it sound like Lennon is unique for this. It is simply a matter of choice whose behaviouswe, as individuals, choose to accept. | Music Chat Room 20 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
