There is really no one best guitarist, they all have different styles which to their own right is best of what they do. So on that note I can't come to a conclusion who is best.

Heres one of my cover:

Pot Head Pixies: My favorites are (in no particular order): Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, Robin Trower, Kim Simmonds, Phil Manzanera, Leslie West, Steve Hackett, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Phil Miller, Jorma Kaukonen, Jimmy Page, Wes Montgomery, Eric Gale, Ralph Towner, John Abercrombie, James Blood Ulmer, George Benson (CTI)

dennygringo56: Inside the minor pentatonic box I would say Satriani. Outside of it, Malmsteem. But there are blues players like Joe Bonamassa that are equally great in their own genre. At the end of the day, Hendrix and Clapton deserve their kudos for pioneering things, as does Ritchie Blackmore and Steve Howe. Iommi is the godfather of goth. What else. Oh, let's not forget Van Halen and Vai. Then there is little old me taking refuge in Honduras for the time being.

dennygringo56: Great Rosanna! I try to spread myself around all genres. At the moment I'm polishing up my rendition of J.S. Bach's Bouree in E minor. I'm primarily Rock oriented but as long as folks are excelling on the axe, I'll dig their style.
Another name you'd appreciate: Roy Buchanan.

struanrobertson02: To many, so it's hard. I can name a ton, but maybe, just maybe. Guthrie Govan or Paul Gilbert? Although I doubt it. Anyway, Hendrix is the most greatest legendary guitarist of all time.
