A Critical Consensus 30 October 2011

StuckInTheSixties
StuckInTheSixties: An assessment of current motion pictures by major American film critics. Film criticism is rated on a scale of 10 (excellent) to 1 (poor). I personally have found this consensus to be very accurate and reliable. Those movies I’ve seen with high ratings were excellent, and those I’ve seen with lower ratings weren’t. The movies are listed according to the critics’ ratings.

When a movie is reviewed by a film critic, that critic might make a smart, intelligent, worthy review ... or they might not. So trying to judge how good a movie is going to be based on a single, or even a few, reviews has an element of chance associated with it. All critics make poor reviews sooner or later.

But when you take the reviews of a large number of critics, and average them out in the way this Critical Consensus does, the critics' rating becomes very reliable.

Karma: I really like all three of them. The key is that it's not a fright-fest or gore-a-thon. The movies are tense. There is anticipation. They are minimalistic and very different than other movies in their genre.

And having had a few days to think on it - I think 3 was the best of them.

Sables: it looks like it might, I wasn't expecting a gore fest, but was looking for a little more out of it

MultifariousEntity: No accounting for taste. For example, I would have put Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and The Guard much much higher than Harry Potter.

I think that generally, your best bet is to just refuse to pay ridiculous movie theater (and to an extent even DVD/Blu-ray) prices that go on to support severely overpaid and overrated entertainers, and encourage directors to shovel out more crap if the movie ends up being bad. I usually just pirate the movie online, and then decide for myself if it's worth paying to see, or if it's even worth finishing.

If you don't demand quality from an industry, you wont get it.

StuckInTheSixties:

The only problem with that is:

~~ Seeing a movie in a theatre is a specific kind of experience, particularly with certain films. It's big. It's a shared experience with an audience.
~~ Pirating movies online is essentially a form of theft. You're stealing.

MultifariousEntity: Actually it's perfectly legal in Canada. You can download any form of media you want, so long as it's only viewed/played/whatever privately, you cannot however upload anything that you don't have the rights to upload. To me it's no different than deciding to buy a car, and then test driving a few until you find one you like.

StuckInTheSixties:

That doesn't appear to be the case:

"...the unauthorized copying - uploading - of complete copyrighted works such as books, movies, or software is illegal under [Canada's Copyright Act.] ..."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_sharing_in_Canada

Legal or not, that doesn't negate it from being theft in the ethical sense. It's the unauthorized usage of someone else's "intellectual property."

And it's nothing whatsoever like test driving a car. Terrible analogy.

Karma: Entity,
Do you mean to say that if you pirate a movie online and watch and like it, that you will then go out and pay to see it or to buy the DVD? Seems unlikely.

MultifariousEntity: As I said, Uploading is illegal. Downloading is perfectly legal. In fact, if you purchase a DVD made in Canada you can view the portion of the law that clearly states so, every DVD displays it much like American DVDs display that FBI warning. "Personal use only."On an ethical level, I don't find it to be theft at all, if the movie is good I'll gladly (and have in the past) pay to purchase a DVD. I understand that it is important to support artists, I'd just rather not unwittingly support some of the utter garbage people are trying to pass off as art.

Another thing I'd like to bring up is the added functionality of having a digital copy of the film, many are explicitly set up to prevent you from copying the film from the DVD, pirating them is simply more functional. I can watch them on my PC, make a hard copy so my parents can play it on their DVD player (and another if they break or scratch that one), or stream them to my younger brother's Xbox.

Sorry. My mistake. Uploading/downloading. One's illegal, the other isn't.

But ethically, it's all in the same cart.

xapim: this seem to be a sort of phsocilogical way of thinking to figure the rating if a movie good (10) or bad (0) when chosen on a knowledge phsycology, i like the movie or dont, and is that science ? statistics that form a percentage of not 50% way of doing so ??? and i just dont understand the phylisophical reasoning of those figuring, on a question i like because...i dont like because....what is this world coming too ! huh, ?

xapim: i kinda think this critic is a way to not be opinionated on the avg way moveis are citicized on weather u like the movie or not,, from your social norms.... this is a fairway to critic movies with out "opinionated favors" wheather you like the movie or not lowers the 9.9 ??? { acording to the major american film critics, opinion;} into a lion king 7.3(good /exellent) , cowboys and alliens 5.8., (somewhere embetween)& the three muskateers 3.8(bad/poor)......though it is intresting if the scale was as of a law that says 2+2=4, on how to review movies"the film critics law",.....is an opinionated review and figuritive/ of large # of critics.....i perfer opinionated. i like the lion king, i didnt like" cowboys and alliens and i like the three muskateers.....
