Wordy Scoring In Detail

Sparkling Wiggles
Sparkling Wiggles: I'm not sure if this has been posted before and it isn't thoroughly explained in the "Help" section of Wordy as far as I've seen. I hope to use this post as a reference to Wordy players so that they can have a better understanding of how the game is scored outside of the bonus multipliers (that are explained well in the "Help" section already).

So as I was playing a while ago, I noticed that the word "GEL" scored 18 points (no bonus tiles) and my opponent's word "ON" scored 26 points (also no bonus tiles).

If you assume that without the bonus tiles the words are scored by individual letter values, then the word "GEL" would only be worth 6 points (G = 2; E = 2; L = 2) and the word "ON" would only be worth 13 (O = 7; N = 6).

I think it's safe to assume, from what I've seen, the scoring of words without the bonus tiles are the product of the individual letter score total multiplied by the amount of letters used in the word.

Therefore, "GEL" = 6 letter points x 3 letters = 18 points; "ON" = 13 letter points x 2 letters = 26 points.

I hope this helps everyone out! The bonus tiles and individual letter values are already explained well in the "Help" section of the game (click the three gray bars at the top right, then click "Help" ), but I haven't seen this explanation before so I thought it would be useful to have here in the forum as a reference.

Rice Rice Baby: Wow, now this is useful. Never think this way before. But then you have 2 minutes to make your move. What if you make OVERLOADING with no bonus tiles? To see letter by letter how much it worth and then what? X11 into it?

Sparkling Wiggles: Yes natilcious...OVERLOADING would be worth 38 points if you counted up the letter scores and added them together. You're right, you need to multiply the letter score total (38 points) by the amount of letters used in the word (11 letters) to get your total. OVERLOADING should equal 418 points without bonus tiles.

robbr7: I can't figure their scoring system out. I'm sending this to "Unsolved Mysteries". Is there anything wrong with posting a list of the alphabet with the value of each letter listed alongside each letter?

zeffur: @Sparkling Wiggles:

More formally, the algorithm is:

Each tile has a base value (look in the Wordy help menu for the table of tile values)
Each tile can have no bonus tile value OR a multiplier (x2 or x4) value OR a +2 value.
All the base tile values * or + the bonus tile values for each tile are summed & then multiplied by the total number of letters in the word.
For example: ION with a Ix4 bonus & a Nx2 bonus would be:
8*4 = 32
7*1 = 7
6*2 = 12
------------
TL = 51 * 3 (letters in the word) = 153 total points for the word ION.
________________________________________________________________________
There is, however, one exception that I haven't figured out yet & that is how to properly calculate the total points for a word when the +2 bonus tile is used.

You would think that it should be:
For example: ION with Ix4, O+2, Nx2, would be:
8*4 = 32
7+2 = 9
6*2 = 12
------------
TL = 53 * 3 (letters in the word) = 159 total points for the word ION, but this is NOT correct. The score is actually higher than 159. I don't remember what the actual score was for ION, so you'll have to use the +2 for some words & then try to figure out how Wordy does the calculation.

If anyone has figured that out yet, please let us know here--because it can produce a higher word point score than you would expect from the above calculation method.

zeffur: Here is an actual example of what I was describing in my previous post:
YEUK: with U+2 bonus

You'd think it should be (but it is not):
4*1 = 4
2*1 = 2
2+2 = 4
5*1 = 5
------------
TL = 15 * 4 = 60 total points, but Wordy scores it as 78 points

So, does anyone have any ideas how a +2 bonus tile on U would be computed by Wordy to arrive at 78 points for that word?

The only thing that I can come up with so far is:
4*1 = 4
2*1 = 2
(2+2)*2 = 8
5*1 = 5
------------
TL = 19 * 4 + 2 =78 total points
