LiptonCambell: This entire thread is based on a misconception that the population of humanity is rapidly growing- when, in fact, we're almost at the point where, in our lifetimes, we might see it level out, or even decline.

Don't believe it? Look at the total fertility rate- it gauges the world population of women in the age group for fertility- between the ages of 15-45, or 15-49. And this shows that the rates have gone DOWN, not up, in the last 60 years- in 1950-1955, a woman was found to have, on average, 4.95 children- as of 2010-2015, that number has shrunk to 2.36.

Less and less people are being born!

Lets look at the benchmarks again;

We reached our first billion by 1804- meaning it took well over 10,000 years to reach 1 billion.

By 1927, we reached two billion- that means it took 123 years to double our population

By 1960, we reached three billion- meaning it took 33 years for the population to grow 33.3%

By 1974, we reached four billion- meaning it took 14 years to grow 25%, and 53 years to double our population

By 1984, we reached five billion- meaning it took 13 years for our population to grow 20%

By 1999, we reached six billion- meaning it took 12 years for our population to grow 16.6%

By 2012, we reached 7 billion- meaning it took 13 years(more time time than the previous milestone) for our population to grow 14%

According to the US Census Bureau, we will reach 8 billion by 2027- meaning it would take 15 years- even more time than the previous year- to grow 12.5%. It's at that point that our population would have doubled from the 1974 rate- meaning it took us - that's right- 53 years to double our population- it didn't change from the 70's.

According to the UN, the population will peak in 25 years- and by the end of the century, the population will shrink by 1 billion people every 20 years. meaning in 75 years- in one lifetime- the population will shrink down to 7 billion people again.

The main culprit to this reverse in the population lies in education, womans suffrage, and the end of poverty- believe it or not, but while things haven't been the best in the states lately, globally, we're looking at a new renaissance- the lowest number of children have died this year than have died in nearly a 1000 years- maybe more. Seven of the ten fastest growing economies of the last five years are African- Adjusted for inflation, in 1960 the income per person in Botswana was $383- now it's $12,000. In the last 50 years, income for people in India has quadrupled - incomes in Brazil has nearly quintupled- global poverty is rapidly coming to an end, which means more and more children can go to school- we've seen a rapid decline of disease that would previously prevent them from attending schools or having a normal life- and having access to education will only serve to improve their lives and give them a chance at a high paying job than if they were chronically ill, or disabled.

It's been proven that, when infant mortality goes down, so goes population growth- just as it's been proven that, as education goes up, population growth goes down, because of a more thoughtful approach to pregnancy and preparation for the environment the child is raised in(further declining poverty)- and, of course, woman suffrage, where a woman has more freedoms and rights and has access and better understanding of birth control(again, stemming from education)

LiptonCambell: I honestly feel initiatives like those are not necessary. If we can stretch our resources for the next century, we will see significant change without resorting to global abstinence. It will just take time.

Not to mention, the countries with the greatest increase in population rate, again, have problems with the aforementioned poverty, woman's suffrage, and education.These people have trouble paying for food- they won't read your protest against population increases- and these places are the places that would need it the most

The top ten nations with the greatest population growth rate are(According to the UN, from 2005-2010);

1 Liberia- 4.55%- 2nd highest poverty rate
2 Burundi 3.90% - 3rd highest poverty rate
3 Afghanistan 3.85%
4 Western Sahara 3.72%
5 East Timor 3.50%- 30th highest poverty rate
6 Niger 3.49%- 32nd highest poverty rate
7 Eritrea 3.24%
8 Uganda 3.24% - 29th highest poverty rate
9 DR Congo 3.22%- highest poverty rate
10 Palestinian National Authority 3.18%

Clearly there is a connection between poverty and population growth- and these kinds of places would be unaffected if we were to abstain from children. meaning the places that have the greatest impact on global population also have problems with starvation- they're not likely to be curbed by internet initiatives, since they, like, need food, and don't honestly care what we think, or even have the ability to view our ideas online lol
