PureSilver67: Trivia:

The fact is you are far more likely to be hurt in a car accident than getting nibbled on by a shark. If you were to stay on the beach and never cross the road you’d still more likely to be attacked by a beach buggy, a 4wd, jet skis or errant surf board than chewed up by Aussie Jaws. Another way of looking at it, more people die eating shark (food poisoning / choking etc) than being eaten by one.

Serabi: Shark attack: Plug pulled on research project
April 20 2012 at 11:07am

Xolani Koyana

FOLLOWING yesterday’s fatal shark attack near Gordon’s Bay, the Department of Environmental Affairs has pulled the plug on the controversial Shark Men documentary.

Opponents of the programme have welcomed the decision.

They said yesterday’s incident in which 20-year-old bodyboarder David Lilienfeld was killed by a shark in Kogel Bay, should be probed to see if there was a link with the programme.

Last week, a row broke out between the department and residents after it granted a permit to a US-based documentary team which tagged sharks in False Bay and the southern Cape.

Residents and surfers opposing the project feared that five tons of fish for chumming on board the Ocearch vessel would attract sharks to the bay.

They went as far as issuing their own “shark alerts” warning the public of “increased shark activity” in the bay.

Yesterday Environmental Affairs spokesman Zolile Nqayi said “in light of the shark attack incident” the department had decided to pull the programme.

“We feel that the incident was not related to the programme. But because of the controversy that has followed it, we have decided to cancel it immediately.

“The programme has already caused a lot of panic in the community and we want to ensure that members of the public enjoy going to the beach without fear,” Nqayi said.

Simon’s Town businessman Dirk Schmidt, who has been one of the main opponents of the project, described the shark attack as “very unfortunate”.

“I send my condolences to his family. This calls for a full-on investigation.

“I cannot say whether there is a link between the (Shark Men project) and this incident but I think the cancellation of the research programme was the correct thing to do,” Schmidt said.

Another opponent of the programme Chris Fallows, a False Bay cage dive operator, said the department should answer for yesterday’s incident.

“I cannot say whether there is a link between this tragic incident and their activities. If there is a link, then the department should communicate with the community. They are the ones who issued the permit when there were growing concerns,” Fallows said.

In False Bay three cage dive operators together put out 75kg of chum a day, and the eight in Gansbaai put out 200kg a day.

Shark spotters saw great whites at Muizenberg and St James last Tuesday, and two at Muizenberg and three at St James the next day.

Last week there were six sightings between Muizenberg and Glencairn. Documentary-maker Chris Fischer, who was busy with a production for National Geographic, posted a message on the TV show Shark Men’s Facebook page denying that his team was responsible for the man’s death.

“There has been tragic news in False Bay today. A body-boarder has been taken by a white shark. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family that has been affected,” he said.

usually to KILL the animal

Serabi: Thank goodness not. No sharks were hunted and killed. The research team has their licence back.

In interviews with other surfers, they said they were aware of the danger but chances are better being killed by a car. They know the risk and are prepared to take it.

Thank goodness for sensible people!

PureSilver67: Oh Serabi I didn't mean (if you took it that way) that the solution WAS to kill the animal, I meant it was usually other people's solution. My opinion is that we share this planet with everything - we are no better - we are animals as well.

Serabi: No, I understood you, don't worry. It is just so stupid that many people WOULD turn around and say, kill all the sharks in False Bay.

We had another shark attack 3 days ago, not fatal. It is always so heartening that the surfers and swimmers who are attacked, never blame the sharks! We are in their world, we are just guests!

I posted something in off topic about the US Navy - the murderers

Serabi: Rare whale washes up on East Cape beach
2012-07-16 09:16

East London - A rare beaked whale has washed up on an Eastern Cape beach, the Dispatch Online reported on Monday.

The whale was found on a beach in Chintsa East last week. Kevin Cole, of East London Museum, was quoted as saying little was known of these whales and that there had been no authenticated sightings at sea in the region.

"Members of the public are thanked for reporting these valuable scientific finds... this could possibly be logged as a first for our area."

Beaked whales can weigh up to 1.5 tons and be up to 5.5m long.

"The whale has a well defined beak, a small triangular dorsal fin set well back from the snout and small flippers," Cole said.

It was not clear what caused the whale to beach.

chronology
chronology: Australia to Cull Great White Sharks. After some high profile Shark attacks, some at least involving Great Whites, Australia has decided to Cull any Great Whites near swimming beaches. The planned Cull has irritated conservationists who say people encroaching on Shark hunting grounds is the problem, not Sharks. The Great White's problems with Public Opinion began with the Movie 'Jaws'. The Movie touched off world wide hysteria with often harmless sharks being bludgeoned to death in some beaches. But the Authorities in Australia insist they are responding to a 'spike' in Shark attacks, not hysteria.

There is the accusation of 'double standards'. While the deaths, however tragic, of 5 Australians has mobilised a million dollar Cull, the deaths of dozens of poor migrant workers, killed by lions while using African Game Reserves at night, as a short cut to cross the boarder into South Africa is not even mentioned in the World Press. The suggestion is that the Africans are breaking the Law and somehow bring their misfortune on themselves, while Australian Surfers are attacked outrageously while out on Shark swimming grounds. An African Game Reserve Officer said; 'The problem is that Lions have found that by just waiting along a illegal footpath at night, they can enjoy a meal without even hunting it, the meal comes to them', Could the same be said of Surfers?

PureSilver67: http://www.surfinglife.com.au/news/asl-news/7124-shark-culling-wa

As far as I know, the shark cull is for Western Australia not the whole of Australia ... REGARDLESS, anyone who knows (of) me would know that I disagree with any form of shark cull! Ridiculous. Their numbers are so low and so many people are killed in hundreds of different ways, including by other people in higher numbers than the number of people killed by sharks!
Humans ARE a species of animal -they are not above all others but part of the environment.

Serabi: Sharks do not target humans as prey. Many bitten humans bleed out, the sharks don't EAT them. Teach swimmers and surfers not to pee in the water, it attracts sharks.

Great whites are picky eaters. Bull sharks are just plain nasty and ill-tempered.

Serabi: They only breach here in the Cape waters. Nobody knows why.

I watched a documentary the other day called - 'The greatest shark attack ever' It was about the USS Indianapolis. 900 Sailors jumped overboard after being hit by 2 Japanese torpedoes. About 300 survived the 4 days in the ocean. After interviewing the survivors, most sailors were only taken by sharks after they died. A hand full were killed by sharks.
