Metaverseguy: (Nietzsche's sister published his last few novels posthumously. She included her and her husband's anti-semitism in the book, yet Nietzsche wasn't. He was praised as a Nazi hero under Hitler until his original manuscripts were found and the texts were corrected.) This is back when philosophy was popular. Nowadays all we ever hear about is physics and stuff.

DIAMONDfire: He was certainly anti-religious. I would have guessed he be anti-Semitic? At least in principle?

Metaverseguy: @swampandfire. I believe he was more anti-Christian, than anti-Semitic. I've also read a couple of his book, Ecce Homo, and his magnum opus. I don't recall any lengthy anti-Semite remarks.

DIAMONDfire: @metaverseguy. My tendency is to interpret his writing on a broad level because I think he was a great example of life , in our current era.

I could be in error but that's the way I take it. He was a thinker, to me that's his main gift. Maybe its the atheism?

Adam Southworth
Adam Southworth: Ludwig Wittgenstein's Major Works.

I dismissed Wittgenstein in my early 20s as someone incapable of expressing a single clear thought. I was too swift to judge. He was a thoughtful man who conceives creative thought experiments, and recasts things in ways that make you see the whole universe in a new light. I admire his precise, analytical mind, and many of his insights seem true or close to truth. The flow of his thought holds my attention and covers many core issues--from phenomenology, to the human mind, the purpose of logic, to the nature of reality.

He draws some bold (I would say false) conclusions, such as claim that we can't think the images of a sentence without the words of the sentence, or the claim that everything is logic. Still, the "logic" of Wittgenstein--like that of the Presocratics--is more like speech, the inner life and the logical/mathematical structure of the universe. Some of his mystic outbursts in this vein remind me of Parmenides' metaphysics:

“Logic fills the world: the limits of the world are also its limits
We cannot therefore say in logic: This and this there is in the world, that there is not."

Adam Southworth: I read all of Nietzsche's works except "Will to Power". I don't know why. I read some of his books twice and Thus Spake Zarathustra four times. I don't recall explicit antisemitic remarks, though I expect they're there. Nietzsche found fault with almost everything, especially those he cared about. I suspect that kept them at a distance. I believe he was more sensitive than people think. He held some race essentialist ideas, including the belief that Jews and their slave-religion had toppled the noble values of other races and, as a small yet devious creature must seek indirect paths to power, had made man capable of "evil" and thus "more interesting." As Nietzsche said, there is a lot of conspiring against the strong and powerful in the Old Testament and talk of "good" as the opposite of them.

Metaverseguy: I have Dune Messiah in my tablet e-reader. I was perusing through that the other day since the movie is supposed to be released later this year. I was surprised to learn the first one is some 800 pages, yet I only remember a few chapters and the general plot. Apparently, there was originally 3 books, then because they did so well he wrote 3 more, then his son did a bunch too.
