The Dumbest and Tiresome Book U Had Ever Read? (Page 9)

deacon7771: rjay4387, I agree with you completely! But you know, isn't it weird, odd, strange and just plane old UNBELIEVABLE at the "examples of great literature" that English teachers and professors pick to teach in their classrooms? I mean, the books that people LIKE to read are universally scorned by the elite "intellectuals," (e.g. any popular writers like Louis L'Amour, Wilbur Smith, Steven King et al) yet when John Steinbeck writes an incredibly depressing and BORING novel about the plight of the poor farmers (i.e. The Grapes Of Wrath), every English professor or teacher just fawns over this "great work."

Seriously, I am not joking about this, I believe there is something about the English language that causes people to be a bit eccentric, and some people to become downright assholes whenever they get too wrapped up in the grammar, spelling, etc. etc. of the language. Just look at ANY college or university, or even high school and ask the students who is the least liked (and often most hated) person on the campus, and the majority will point to the English 101 professors. I don't really know exactly WHAT it is about the English language, and what it is clearly NOT about other languages that makes people act like such assholes.

slasian: It somehow baffles me too, mine is Emma by Jane Austine but this book is one of the esteemed novel written in English language. Yet I am not a fun of the contemporary, 'escape literature' also.

Slaughterin: None, the books I've read were all worth it in the end. I remember reading Tolstoy's Anna Karenina because I was interested in Russia and thinking that this is more a fúcking soap opera than anything else.

bitebackchat: If a book became that tiresome i seriously doubt that i would bother to persevere, However the drivel and incomprehensible parabels of the bible would be an obvious choice, although the quarn i probably would find equally boring and mundane stooped in morals of dogma.

slasian: do not judge a book by its cover. (You might find the Quran more interesting).

Personally, I had read some part of it and it is as tiresome as the bible but you should give it a try before you judge it.

shadowline: There's nothing tiresome about the Bible. That's why the finest literary critics there are regard it as among the world's greatest literary creations. The parables of the New Testament are the best demonstration I know that it doesn't take length or wordiness to go to the heart of the human condition.

bitebackchat: Wow slasian you actually took time to read the quran ? I'm curious if you read the bible as well and if so which of the two did you find easier to comprehend or rather which book were you able to focus on for longer ?

slasian: I didn't say I read the Koran from end to end, I said I had read some part of it And I did say, I find it tiresome (didn't I say ...it is as tiresome as the Bible?)

The problem with the Koran is the stories are jumbled and there is no chronological order. Compared to the Bible, it also lacks vivid characters, most of it is orders and briefs for historical events. The Koran, like I said is Topsy-Turvey. (I was amazed to find the Story of the Greeks and their battle with Persia. Like always it is just a brief of the historical account followed by although it is a brief then followed by a tiresome, Scolding, reprimanding commands, blessings, blah blahs, the Koran was in favor of the Greeks! This fascinated me.)

I can say I have read the bible from end to end. The problem with the Bible, half of the new testament is nothing but tautology. The old testament is like a crazy adventure book, a lot of battles and heroes Yet, it is full of racism specially the old testament where the chosen race is allowed to commit genocide (God often commands them to kill infants, women and everything that lives including cattle, camels and horses).

To be honest, Couldn't focus on the new testament. It is tiresome.

bitebackchat: Sorry if you thought that I meant read the quarn all the way through even in part I was curious to know which was more tiresome and the brackets of the wording inside would suggest that the bible was in fact more tiresome for you but hey its nice to have someone actually breakdown their viewpoint in length to a simple curious question thank you.

foosquad: The Shadow of Reichenbach Falls by John King checks the "tiresome" box for me. I couldn't finish it. I was definitely too young when I attempted Austen and Tolstoy, but I hope to return to both in the future. In their case it wasn't so tiresome as demanding.

foosquad: Ayn Rand would do much better if she did not relapse into lengthy monologues. She may believe in her ideas very passionately but as a writer, she lacks technique. Anthem was more tolerable than either Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead, but possibly because it was shorter. In any case it's merely a rehashing of Yevgeny Zamyatin's We.
