jink88: Pit Bulls are banned here in Ontario Canada, quite sad as it is the owner's not the dogs fault.

Serabi
Serabi: There is something like instinct, natural or in-bred. Pit bulls, as their name implies, have been bred specifically to fight in pits - to the death. It will take many generations to get rid of the aggressive gene, if at all.

Friends of mine had Greyhounds, 2 lovely gentle family dogs. They grew up with the family cats and there was never a problem. They were lying down one day and one of the cats ran past at speed, both Greyhounds were up in a flash, ran the cat down and ripped it in half. After the fact, they were very surprised at their little friend - now two half friends. Instinct is instinct. On race tracks they are supposed to run after a flufball/rabbit. We have never had dog racing in South Africa in my lifetime, which is easily 7-8 dog generations. So why is the instinct still so strong?

Border collies, bred as family pets, still get depressed and show behavioral problems if the 'herding' instinct is not met. Often getting chickens as herding subjects will solve the problem. Instinct rules.

Am I in favour of erradicating the Pit bull breed, most definitely, YES. Getting rid of the dogs after killing a pedestrian or visitor and blaming the owner is futile, a life has already been lost.

Foxfairy: Most people can guess mine by looking at my screen-name but I will tell you anyhow it's the fox...the dog that acts like a cat. They are the symbol of camouflage and the playful trickster. Much misunderstood by the media and folklore...standing out by blending in. It's the wise fox that knows better to use all it's resources, cashing some for later. They have so been my power animal for a very long time now.
