Root-Kit prevention yeahmansf: How do you prevent a root-kit from installing in your eeproms; MB bios, video bios and other eeprom cards and how do u get rid of it once installed Metaphorguy: Do you have this virus on your computer currently? What type of operating system are you running? If you do have this virus how did you discover it? Often times you can remove a virus by identifying it and then following instruction guides online and installing one (or several) program(s) to remove it. The best prevention of root-kits is the same prevention for all viruses, trojans, and malware: firewall, anti-virus software and using common sense when browsing the internet. (Don't download suspicious programs or enable Flash, Java when not necessary). If you have installed several virus removal tools and the program is still being detected the last option is too simply backup your important files and re-install the operating system. I have removed a few viruses and it is very time consuming, but possible. yeahmansf: What tools do u use to track it down? Most root kit detector only scans for viruses and/or root kit that is on the HD or memory resisdent but having a hard time scanning for it in the bios. I am using win 7 pro, linux, linux like backtrack 4 trying to find a reliable way to scan for root kits. Do you have hands-on experience on root kits? Metaphorguy: I've had a root-kit on my computer before and I was forced to remove it, but I don't think it went as deep as the BIOS. Therefore, I'm not sure of any type of scanning software that can check it. However, there are ways to reset the BIOS.
