commanchedogsoldier: JIMI HENDRIX WAS ONE OF THE FIRST GUITARISTS TO MASTER THE USE OF DISTORTION AND USE IT TO HIS BENEFIT. YOU COULD SAY HE WAS THE PIONEER OF METAL. IN FACT THE FIRST EVER 200 WATT AMP THAT MARSHALL MADE WAS FOR HIM. (BECAUSE HE KEPT BLOWING ALL THE OTHERS THEY GAVE HIM!!!) AND AS FAR AS EXPERIMENTAL SOUNDS GO WELL THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE BO DIDLEY.

FerdinandBardamu: Without a doubt, Black Sabbath. Their self-titled first album set the stage for what was to come and by the time "Paranoid" was out a few months later, their songs were trademark metal riffs.
Judas Priest was the first band to really break away from the blues riffs and concentrating on heavy. "Sad Wings Of Destiny" is one of the landmark metal releases of all time.
Iron Maiden are number three in terms of being influential. They had a huge impact on future metal bands.
But it can be argued that Angus & Malcolm Young (although not technically metal) were heavy influences too.
