Older singers

I love to sing
Classic_Pandora: Have you ever thought that you might be too old in a younger based society of trying to cut it out in the music world?

I had the goal of being a singer growing up, but with having looks less than desirable for even the average person, I left the dream die down. (Basically, I looked goofy and I was extremely heavy.) Now with the likes of Mandisa, Jennifer Hudson, and a few others, this barrier has been slightly knocked down, and I would like to maybe see if it would have panned out for me. (Of course, the only other thing I have to get past after that is stage fright and performance anxiety, since I had the perfectionism stuck in my head.)

However, as I have said, who would buy an album from an almost 40 year old that is a first timer? Who would go ballistic over that? I also don't have too much written for myself as when I studied music theory in school, the class was a joke. I knew enough of what was being taught, and the teacher was only interested in trying to get us to appreciate classical music, not helping us in learning why we needed to know things about keys, chording, time signatures and changes, and such.

Thankfully, music appeals to all in some form. I also know it's hard work in trying to get myself to that point, which I know that I want to do. Unlocking this part of me to at least attempt my dreams to happen would allow me to see if it would have panned out or not. But why do I feel like I'm too old to try it? Are there any thoughts on this?
