work of art , arthouse genre

people that like movies
davyboy_1: Some movies are just a work of art, beautiful to look at , enlightens the mind , can be uplifting .You could watch them again and again without ever tiring of them .
Name any film that did inspire YOU to call it a work of art and WHY ?

I'll begin
The belly of an architect (1987) starring Brian Dennehy ,
beautiful visual film , the director uses visual techniques to highlight the alienation of the main actor , a big man who is dwarfed amoung the roman architecture ,a good image very fitting to the disentegration of the main actors marriage , work and health .

VinceMoon: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai...it's my favorite Jarmusch film and a VERY solid mob movie. The soundtrack fits perfectly and the dialogue is efficient, which is something I look for in all films. The cast is great and it might be my favorite Forest Whitaker role other than his work in The Last King of Scotland.

Anne aka Mags: Pay it Forward.
The message of it is simple. When someone does you a favour, you pay it forward to 3 other people. It has to be something that he/she would not be able to do for him/herself.

It is a way of life that is inspiring and encourages a more community minded way of living. Love it!

davyboy_1: La Leggenda del Santo Bevitore 1988 , translates as the legend of the holy drinker ......this is a story about Andreas, the holy drinker, a beggar endowed with an amazing sense of dignity. It takes its own leisurely pace, but goes very far, very deep indeed into the human soul. It follows Andreas as he witnesses a series of mircles ( money keeps coming into his possesion ) and goes through all his memories and how he ended up sleeping under the bridges of Paris .The films opens as he is lent 200 francs by a stranger as long as he promises to repay it to a local church when he can afford to do so ; the film follows Adreas's constant frustrations as he attempts to do so. This film will really suck you into his world , a real work of art.

davyboy_1: Crouching tiger , hidden dragon (2000) China , a real chineese work of art , beautiful chereographed martial art scenes , even the title of the film has much meaning as the dragon in china refers to the spiritual and the tiger represents human aspects , and the film plays out and explores these individual themes. The title refers to the mysteries that lie below the surface of an otherwise normal-looking individual . The plot involves two warriors in pursuit of a stolen sword .It also involves a notorious fugitive and all are led to an impetuous, physically-skilled, teenage daughter of a nobleman.

davyboy_1: The Sheltering Sky (1990 ) about an american artist couple trying to rediscover themselves while touring around Africa but where the main actor insists he is not a tourist as he had no plans of return .The American couple Port and Kit Moresby travel aimlessly through Africa, searching for new experiences that could give sense to their relationship. But the flight to distant regions only leads both deeper into despair. The book on this film is much funnier but still well worth the watch as John Malkovich brings a great intellectualism to this film ( as he always does ) .

burnt_reynolds: I don't think any of you have actually recommended a "arthouse" movie yet..

Films I would consider arthouse would be...

Eraserhead - David Lynch

Salo (or the 120 days of sodom) - Pier Paolo Pasolini

Holy Mountain - Alejandro Jodorowsky

Un chien andalou - Luis Buñuel / Salvador Dalí

La piel que habito - Pedro Almodovar

Quest for fire - Jean-Jacques Annaud

Drive - Nicolas Winding Refn

...to name a few of the more popular titles.

But I suppose it's only a genre and therefore purely relative.
