beagirl: Working with a local rescue, my family and I have fostered many dogs. We've had some that were so neglected that the parasites and open wounds had reduced them to bags of bones so beaten down by "life" that the vet was worried they might not recover. We've had some that had never been inside a house before, one had been tied to a tree his whole life and had his collar grown into his skin, no fur on his back because of fungus & infection... We've experienced the love of an "unloved" animal. The rescued dog blossoms with a little love and safety. All of our fostered dogs have been adopted into wonderful homes and we are so thankful! Our recent addition, Beatrice is a wonderful girl, who is slowly learning to trust that hands are for good things like pets and treats. She flinches less everyday and hasn't growled in weeks. We adopted Bea and she's a great addition to our family

beagirl: I understand sables! At the rescue we shed many tears - lots for sadness (those animals we can't help) and some for joy (dogs & cats going home to families that WANT them). My compromise with my husband is to foster the ones' in need of "TLC" and help them become more adoptable... It's hard when they find new homes, but I can tell you, I have no greater joy than to meet one of my fosters' at the local dog park - Happy, healthy and having a wonderful life! It keeps me going

Sables: Oh I well imagine, wouldn't mind doing that but we have a one pet restriction and am in a townhouse so my mini schnauzer would be put out as well! Waited for a couple of years on the rescue for a mini, finally got one from a breeder then a week later they came up with a rescue, wish I could have more.......

beagirl: OK - Here's an item that folks might discuss:

Is it cruel to chain a dog outside (as in an "outside" dog)? Why or why not?

Sables: I think that is so cruel, It would be safer for the dog to be in a kennel of some sort.

Lediannaia_Koroleva: Hello! I just joined this club I want to share with you two stories about animal cruelty which have a happy ending.

More than two years ago, an ordinary family had a really nice puppy. One day, they gave the little pupy a long and cold bath. After the bath, the puppy didn't stop trembling; it was cold and breathed with difficulty. And what did the family do? Did they take their lovely puppy to a vet? NO, they didn't. They took it out of their house and left it in the street. That was the best solution those idiots found. Fortunately, my mom was coming from the grocery store and saw that puppy, which in that moment was barely breathing. Already at home, with us, we covered it with some sheet, gave it some medicine and fed it. Next day, that lovely puppy was happily playing with us. Nowadays, Ecaterina "the sweet puppy" still lives with us. We love and respect her. She is an important member of our family.

Around two years ago, someone or some people, it is unknown for me, threw 3 new born puppies in a place where people take their rubbish for the dustcart to pick it. Again, my mom was going past that place and heard the crying of a little creature. She didn't know what it was, but she was curious, so she paid careful attention and found out where that crying came from. Those sounds came out from a small and dirty box, where 3 new born puppies had been abandoned; one of them was already dead. Without hesitating, my mom called me and asked me to bring a clean basket and some sheet in order to place the two alive puppies there. We took them home, cleaned them with a special cream and fed them with lukewarm milk we poured in a tiny baby's bottle. We went to a vet for advise about how to take care of those puppies, but the answer we got wasn't really positive, neither helpful. The vet wouldn't do anything that could save those little puppies. Sadly, two days after we found them, a second puppy died. But the same wouldn't happen to the third one, which continued breathing and sucking delicious and lukewarm milk from her baby's bottle. I remember every time "Tomasa", because that was the name I gave her, finished her milk she looked like a ball; her belly looked as if I would exploit. At that time, she still had her eyes closed. She was really small, I could hold her whole body in one of my hands. As Ecaterina, Tomasa still lives with us and we love her. She is just one of us. The youngest menber of our mingled family.
