“Eye Candy For Car Freaks #06 (Photo Essay)”

Original Blog Posting Date:

June 28, 2010

Original Blog Text:

I thought I'd finished with the eye candy, but when I stopped by the supermarket this afternoon, I found this little baby sitting in the parking lot. It's a restored 1937 Ford four-door convertible. Unfortunately, it was parked in a space that shaded the front end, and as I was trying my best to squeeze some decent photos out of the situation, the owner emerged from the store, and the subject of my photo essay was driven away.

Aerodynamics obviously weren't the major concern in those days. It's amazing these cars can still be in such fine condition.

Aerodynamics weren't paid all that much attention to for years after that too. In fact, those SUV vehicles so popular today have terrible aerodynamics. The wind resistance with the typical SUV isn't much of a factor until you get up to faster speeds, where it really begins to affect mileage in a big way. For instance, if you took an aerodynamically designed sedan, with an engine that had similar fuel consumption to an SUV, and ran them both around a track at, say, 35 mph, they would have fairly similar fuel consumption rates. But as you got to faster speeds, say 65 mph, the big blocky shape of the SUV would start to produce a far greater degree of drag, and the sleeker sedan would out perform it dramatically.

The owner of this '37 Ford said that it had been sitting for many years in a garage covered with a piece of canvas, so it wasn't being driven around all that time. But yeah, these old relics are pretty rare.

Note:

Original blog comments may appear disjointed. This is because over time, some users that posted comments later deleted their Wireclub accounts. When users delete their accounts, their comments are (usually) deleted as well. Also, during the conversion to New Wireclub, many of the emoticons used have unfortunately disappeared.
